(( Your all seriously over thinking this, it's a world made of ice and we've got flamethrowers. We'll just make our own entrance. Why fight through a potential enemy one when we can just melt one then collapse it behind us? If they are inside they'll never see us coming if not then we bypass everything and drop right in. ))

I'm good to go. Requisition as many fuel tanks for flamethrowers as we can possibly carry, then stick the rest inside the transport. We're gonna need those flamethrowers if it comes to tunnel fighting.

1) Fire requires oxygen. We can't make a corridor longer than a few hundred meters.
2) We don't know how cold this world is. We might not have the time to dig.
3) Ice melts into water. Evaporating it is fairly hard. (Also, everyone not near the flamers would be covered by flashfreezing steam. Not comfortable.)
4) Ice is not the most structurally intact element. Especially when you want to keep the inside at a comfortable temperature. Most likely, most of the city is reinforced.

Meh it's an RTD, the laws of physics don't really apply if you get a good roll. But it's still a good option for avoiding the defenses on a tunnel if it's occupied even if you just melt a path that cuts into the tunnel further down to surprise the occupiers.

Sorry if this is already covered.

Request a series of tents that can be sealed on to the rear compartments of our transports, the bigger the better.
(( You know just a massive tent for when the transports not moving, they have heating so we attach the tents and open the rear compartment. It won't be comfortable but it'll be warmed then outside the tents. So it'd buy us time if we can't get inside right away. ))

A simple military tent could do that, I got my hands on a surplus tent from Iraq, it has built in Heating and cooling. I doubt they don't have access to tents even better then that.

Actually its a forum games set in the world of 40k which the laws of physics apply so that tunnel would never work not to mention the planet isn't solid ice. The surface is ice, and snow and frozen dirt, but the cavern system is in solid rock so only the surface is really frozen, or icy.

(( Uh ok? But I figured this is simpler since it's nothing but a piece of material that you stick onto the end of the transports. Either way works.

But I think yours is actually more useful, it'd allow us to leave scout squads on the surface without needing to leave a transport as well. ))

When you all voice that you have no questions the Commissar-General dismisses you all to go prepare your troops for planetfall, you send a soldier ahead to your men telling them to prepare as soon as you leave the war room and progress is well underway by the time you arrive. The most important thing you notice upon arrival is a small group of munitorum officials overseeing the transfer of halftracks and a trio of scout salamanders to your regiment. All throughout the hangar bay you see your men marching into the massive dropships, some carrying crates, barrels, and other vital supplies while your current mechanized detachments of your army roll into the transport beside them.

Soon enough you clamber aboard one of the dropships yourself with your command staff, and the two Commissars close behind, within minutes the troop bay door slams shut and the engines roar to life. You go up to the cockpit a few minutes after launch to talk with one of the pilots for a bit about possible LZ conditions, when you find out they'll likely be safe you thank the man and turn to go back into the troop bay. However you stop and take a look out at the fleet in time to see hundreds of Devourer Dropships pouring out of the various ships with their orbit to atmosphere fighter escorts as the weapon batteries on the larger ships let loose salvo after salvo at the closing group of Chaos Frigates. Turning your back to the fight you walk calmly into the troop bay and take your seat beside the Commissar-General, not one minute after a voice comes on over the comms listing casualties of the Imperial Fleet. All in all four frigates, one cruiser, and two troop transports were lost ... the rest of the planetfall is filled with an mourning silence and a few quietly murmured prayers.

---

The dropships carrying the Volgar 1st, 2nd, and 3rd land outside a small outpost on the side of a mountain, the land around the base of the mountain is covered in knee deep snow and as you exit the dropship on one of the scout salamanders you hear alarms screeching from the base and a number of flashing red lights spread about on the roofs of the outpost. As the troops unload from the dropships, a large number of them riding in the halftracks, on the Basilisks or clinging to the sides of the Trojans as they plow their way forward through the snow towards the gaping tunnel entrance carved into the mountain in the middle of the outpost. Hoping off the scout salamander with your personal guard close behind you follow General Sadra and Colonel Kurtz into one of the outlying buildings.

After passing through several airlocks you enter to find the building rather warm with displays and computer banks arrayed all over the place ... and a heap of dead bodies in the center of the room with blood splattered everywhere. A few of the guards are searching through the corpses, but you find Sandra and Kurtz looking at the biggest display in the room, it shows a massive spinning cloud like symbol on the screen moving towards what you think is this outpost and growing every second. As you approach the screen Sadra looks over at you and speaks,

"We're not sure what this means, apparently every computer but this one was fried by whoever killed those workers back there, and they left this one running. As far as we can tell its some form of early detection, Kurtz here doesn't think its urgent enough for us to warrant rushing the men, and I'm just unsure. So I'd like to know, whats your opinion Colonel Mordecai?"

As he asks the question you sense there is more behind it then simply wanting your opinion your just not sure what exactly ...

(( If we guess what the symbol means can we react to it properly or do we need a roll to decide if we get it right?

Because I'm pretty sure the mother of all blizzards is on it's way based on the symbol and that it's growing. ))

There will not be a roll involved in deciding if you get it right :P

(( Well since it's just growing and not showing something joining it that limits it to a storm, the planet is covered in ice and snow which means a blizzard, the fact that it's growing support that given that it's just collecting more snow as it moves.
The only bit I'm unsure on is if it's a blizzard or a kind of tornado but with the current information thats impossible to determine.

Does the display tell us how long we have before it arrives? ))
