High casualty rates? Perfect!!!! Assuming I can become some kind of shape shifting super soldiers mutant cyborg cluster fucked into one style thing.

Which if I've read what the doctor is correctly is possible and likely to result in me looking like a giant slug.

Torn between all three choices, really.  Swordsman would impress our troops.  After all, until these guys showed up, which may have been during our lifetime, swordsmen were likely the most skilled, and favored, warriors.  So that would make our NATIVE troops respect us.  Presence would help bail us out, by driving our men to greater strengths against greater foes so they can SAVE us if need be.  And General will help mostly BEFORE battles but in the case of an ACTUAL siege, which this was not, it will GREATLY help to move defenses around, and to salvage destroyed buildings faster so we can use the scrap to reinforce walls and bunkers.  We might just need that for those week, month, or even YEAR long sieges we will eventually face.  Also, don't just go and skip through the healing!  We can still LEARN while injured, hit the damn books!  We have NO technical skills, which can be buffed by a month of solid reading, right?

You wake up groggy, and aware of a constant slight pain in your left shoulder, at first your vision is blurry but it quickly recovers and you take a look around the sterile white room you're in. Besides the bed you're laying on, a chair in the corner, and a mass of medical machines and monitors to your right it is eerily empty, you sit back and think of the events that occurred before this when it hits you. Looking at your left arm you find everything from the shoulder down is gone, replaced by bionic replacement that glimmers slightly as the light hits marking it as recently created. You grimace at the sight of whats become of your arm, but are at the least glad you still have a left arm even if it is a mechanical replacement like this.

Its not long before someone enters, a slumped short figure with a number of medical mechadendrites sprouting out of his back and swaying slightly as he moves closer. The man looks at you for a few seconds, his face  covered by a medical mask so all you can see are the dull grey of his eyes, before he turns his attention to the bank of monitors beside you.

"It is a good thing they got you here when they did Colonel Mordecai, any longer and you may well have died from blood loss, however as you've probably noticed we could not save your arm. The damage was quite extensive, in fact it was a surprise the thing stayed attached that long given that the chain axe had sheared through almost the entirety of the bone in your shoulder. We did what we could for you, and that arm is the result, just as a warning that arm is stronger then your old one and not something most human's could muster with their flesh and bone limbs.

You've been out for a week since your defense at Salix Major, you'll be glad to know your regiment managed to win that battle and all the forces of Chaos that went into the Pass of the Martyr never came out though the same can nearly be said about your regiment. You'll be in this place for two more weeks so get used to it, I'll send someone in to fetch anything you might need here in a bit."

---

You spend a large amount of your time digging through all the books on lasgun maintenance and very basic technical knowledge you can get your hands on. You learn a fair amount thanks to all the reading you do, but you feel your understanding of technology is still lower then the average of what most other Guardsmen, and more specifically other Commanders of Guardsmen Regiments, should know. At the very least you feel you could field strip a lasgun, and put it back together without too many problems which is quite an improvement considering where you came from.

The rest of your time is spent taking care of all the regimental problems the loss of nearly half the Volgar 3rd has caused which pertains primarily to the merging of the 7th Salix Infantry into the ranks of the Volgar 3rd and some additional reinforcements from Volgar that'd been signed off as specialist units to other regiments. Along with that comes the reports for all the wounded from the Pass of the Martyr, altogether around sixty of the one hundred and eighty wounded survived the battle and are now back in action, the rest succumbed to their wounds or were given honors and discharged from the military unable to continue the fight. Finally a handful of reports come in about the condition of the warzone, the battle on Galin and Salix was drawing to a close and the forces were already being assigned elsewhere, to other warzones that need them.

By the time you've recovered the Volgar 1st, 2nd, and 3rd have already been reassigned to their next warzone however the trip there is gonna take three months so you have a lot of time to prepare ...

Well since my account has not been deleted  yet I may as well keep going.

Move 3 leather armored guardsmen squads from 1st to 2nd battalion, move 1 anti tank team and 1 heavy weapon team.
Move 4 squads of guardsmen from 2nd to 1st battalion.

Have every man in every regiment trained in massed fire drills, including the engineers. Have those who already have the training assist those who don't. Promote the 2 infantry units in the command battalion into veteran squads.

Send a request to have additional flak armor and hotshot rifles send to us before we arrive at our destination. Also request additional forces, especially veterans, ogryn and tanks been assigned to us if possible and more scouts.

Continue meeting all our men and encouraging them so they get to know us, continue working on our technical ability with the help of somebody more experienced.

- snip -

Sounds good to me. Else, we might want to check on the commisar thou - Or his records.

Also, make the request for scouts our main priority. We need information badly, at all times.

( Never really heard any complaints what-so-ever. Thou there are times people that are "too new" are suspected of being an additional account of someone who really wants a specific outcome on a suggestion. But with how things are going in this one, your suggestion will just be added to the mold, so no worries. At least thats how I see it. )

(( Uhh, it says our people all have good quality melee weapons. What kind of weapons is that? Ignore this if they already have them. ))

Send a requisition in to have good quality chain swords assigned to every man in our regiment, failing that request good quality normal swords. If either is successful then spend the trip drilling our men in how to use swords since we are skilled at it already and it'll enhance the regiment sense of identity and loyalty to us.

Need to fix that but everyone from Volgar has excellent quality swords, those from Salix simply have the standard issue guardsmen bayonet, as for the chainswords there is no way your regiment can get those at the time. You'll have to become a lot more renowned, and your regiment will need to be worth a lot more in fighting quality before you can get something expensive like chainswords.

(( Could we get some sent to us to give to the newbies and then train them all to become competent swordsmen like us? It'd be quite an edge if we ever face chaos again if all our men are good with sword, since from what just happened they seem to like getting up close. ))

You can get them swords, and train them yes, but they will never be good as your men from Volgar who fought wars with swords, bows, and the like.

(( Well it still seems like a good idea to me, they're more likely to survive in future, especially if we have to face orks. Besides even our own men aren't that good with swords yet. So once they all have that massed fire drill thing done they should learn swords as well. Good skill for long and close range will keep them alive. ))

Nah, we should be running them through entrenchment drills. Teach them how to dig and how to pile earth. Teach them how to use cover.

Sure we can. This is an Imperial Navy ship, there's enough room in there we could build ourselves a city and call ourselves the King of the Jews.
