+1 to what alexandria said - solid.

Only thing I want to add is to construct blockers to to impede any advance that their vehicles might undertake. Unless we are very sure that they have none. How far is the pass really? Or rather, could we create a bottle-neck by blasting some of the sides? Think of it - bottle-neck means easy aiming and pickings, and if our artillery is a few trenches behind, the mayhem will not stop with our first fall-back.

(( You just reminded me of something I totally overlooked, thanks. It's to wide to bottleneck it without using up far to much of our limited supplies and as for blockers, if I can make a suggestion, make it large pits, that way it costs us nothing but some time and the enemy can't just fire over the blockers but instead is stuck in a big hole. Preferably make them hidden pits strong enough that only a vehicle or something equally heavy will collapse it. ))

Design the trenches so that they are completely exposed to fire from the next line behind them. (( Basically make sure the trenches offer great protection at the front but horrible at the back so if chaos capture one line it offers no defenses against fire from the next one back. [/b]

+1 to lurker.

On trench design... we might want to have safe-escape tunnels that we can collapse / blockade at will. It will not only come in handy in combat, it might strengthen their morale, especially if it turns out to be a multiple-day siege. Wich we suspect as of now.

Else, I am all for the pit-idea - only that they will be able to use it as cover. Wich puts all ideas of pits into jeopardy somehow. Eh, just build them outside of the weapon-range of conventional riflez. And make it a mine-field of pitfall-spike-traps. Since we are dealing with mostly unarmored cultists, wooden spikes taken from the jungle will do fine, without straining our resources. On second thought, I do think that the normal troops are better spent on building the trenches. Only take the infantery-pit-suggestion if the trenches are not getting us anywhere better - depending on terrain and building-supplies left.

The tunnels are already planned, and started.

Also -1 to Alexandrias Trench Design.(Weak back, Strong Front We are here to hold them as long as possible, if the Chaos Dudes start digging in that is exactly what we want to happen. Besides if they send in Raptors or Drop Troops we might need to defend into two directions.

Medical Facilities: Establish a Field Hospital in a Underground Bunker behind the Third Defense Line. 5 Centaurs from the Artillery Batallion are to be used as Emergency Transports to extract wounded from the front.

(( You saw what happened when we fought cultists who had cover, if we have to fight chaos marines who are using our trenches for cover our men will be cut to shreds, besides chaos will not dig in they're built for close range and melee. ))

(( Nice, at least we can reform the 2 veteran units then. But remind me to shoot the general one day when we outrank him. ))
Shooting is too nice. Besides, I think standard procedure for that is to perform circumcision with a chainsword.

Trenches tend to be weak from above. We can just shell them with our mortars, killing pretty much anyone inside if they know how to aim.

Do we have poison gas shells? I mean, we're fighting a future version of WOI anyway.

I think risking them using our trenches is better than exposing ourselves to being flank by Raptors or drop troops. Besides, the longer they sit around, the better. Like he said, if they're using the trenches, they're not advancing. And it doesn't really matter even if they did have trenches, since we're not going to be attacking them.

(( And when they're hitting us using heavy weapons from our own trenches ours will be cut to shreds. They want the facility so they'll keep attacking and use our trenches for cover just for heavier stuff.

But I see you raptor point, it's what I'd do with drop troops so new plan.

Plant bombs on redoubts, bunkers and in the trenches, when we fall back wait for as many enemy as possble to take the trench then blow it.

(( Solves my problem, doesn't cause yours and kills a lot of enemies. ))

Bombs could be problematic though. Single wayward bullet and the entire trench explodes with us still in it.

Yeah, but you also have to have enough explosives for it, not to mention the fact you need a ton more if you want to mine the areas between the trench lines :P
