If we take out the local AA units, can we ask for more resupplies to be dropped in?
If the Volgar 2nd fail in taking them out you can certainly give it a try, or you can move into assist right away your choice really.

I think we should send some troops to assist, but not too many. We are going to need a lot of firepower here I think.

Yup thats why I picked the units I did.

We can't send to many to leave the line undermanned, but we need to send enough to be effective, the command battalion is a strong force in it's own right, 6 units of guardsman backing them up provides the support they'll need for the attack and it still leaves 3 full battalions worth of men plus the artillery to hold the line.

So enough to hold for a long time and enough men with the veterans leading to smash the enemy AA and call for reinforcements and supplies, plus doing the job will earn us a nice reward hopefully.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Turning to the men of your command battalion you speak up,

"We need those AA batteries down, and I know that the 2nd was ordered to do it, but I'm sending you along with six squads from the 1st, 2nd, and Heavy Weapons battalion to assist. If we hurry this move will take them by surprise, and the combined force of the 2nd's assault and ours will bring the AA batteries down before the enemy can send reinforcements. Now get moving before we starve, or worse run out of munitions for the fething autocannons.

Commissar-General Kalman sir, I would like it if you accompanied my men on the assault, its not gonna be easy and they'll need someone with experience in fighting Chaos there to lead them."

The man grinned slightly as he took his bolt pistol from its holster, and slammed a clip of shells into it,

"Why of course, a Commissar serves best at the front ... and so does a good commander, you must lead by example at a time like this Mordecai as I know you feel the same this will be an interesting tour with you nearby."

As the man finishes he slides the bolt pistol into its holster, and stalks off with the stormtroopers and Cadet Commissar Malkon nipping at his heels like a pack of loyal dogs, you realize that of course in all honesty that is what they are. You take time to think of what the Commissar said, and quickly catch the advice hidden within it, a commander must lead by example if he wishes to trust his men and for them to trust him in return.

Smiling slightly you give the order to move out, by the time you cross the trench the engineers are working on all the stragglers have caught up and a force of of close to one hundred and twenty soldiers begins to make its way up through the pass in straggled lines or small clumps as they hugged the cliff faces to either side. You find yourself tagging along with the Commissar-General, both of your bodyguards spread out around you to protect from any harm, you walk in silence but quickly find that the the Commissar has a kind of aura about him that makes those near him walk tall with pride.

...

Silence falls throughout your forces as they begin to creep towards the mouth of the canyon, the jungle sprawling out of it like some giant sea of green, hand signals flash down the line as squads begins to move from cover to cover. Near one hundred lasguns rise at once as a few men emerge from the thick of the jungle, you order the men to lower their weapons as you quickly see they're men from your regiment, some of the scouts come to greet you.

The first one takes pulls back the hood of the camo-cloak as you approach, you soon realize close on half his throat is a mechanical replacement as a mechanical voice greets you,

"Colonel Castronova, names Ralph, Captain of the scout battalion, my men call me "Old Ironside" on account of about half my right side being replacements. Glad to see you got through the canyon with out incident, I lost a man a ways back through there to a some feth of a wolf that disguised itself as a rock.

However we both know you wanna hear about what we've found, well there is some good news we found the crash site of the dropship off to the east, and some sort of Chaos camp about half a kilometer to the north. I've already dispatched all but my squad to go and recover what they can from the crash, and we stayed behind to give you what information we can on the camp.

From what we managed to see before having to back off it has one of the anti-air batteries inside, they've hid the guns up in the tops of the trees, and from what we saw they've built a small town up in there with them. On ground level there is a wall made out of armor plating welded together and fused into the trees somehow, we couldn't get a look at anything inside because of the walls but the entire place stinks of decay to the point that we all about retched just being near it."

You notice Commissar Kalman's brief look of confusion, but have little time to think on it as the men look at you waiting for an assault plan.

Send the scouts to locate the 2nd then establish communications, inform them of our position and numbers then suggest a co-ordinated assault.

If they agree wait for the time we agreed then attack, if they don't or they aren't located attack anyway.

The 6 guardsmen squads are to form a battle line then advanced on the walls to either side of the entrance in two groups of 3 getting as close as possible without being noticed.

Once they engage the veteran squads, commissar, colonel and bodyguard units are to assault the entrance directly and push to the AA gun to blow it.

Once they make it inside the guardsmen squad are to follow them in then search the camp for supplies and information.

While we wait for information on the 2nd attempt to bring the basalisk we have remaining into range, if this is done in time then begin shelling the camp ahead of the assault aiming to destroy the walls.

This might be something innocuous, like surprise that chaos is bothering with defensive walls, or it might be something worse, like surprise that there are Destroyer forces operating in a theatre that was primarily an Antipath operation. We may or may not want to question him.
"Captain Ralph, given that you said the anti-air battery is hidden in the tree tops, would I be correct in assuming that the trees around the camp are extremely large and solid? How likely would grenades be to bring one down, or would a melta bomb be required? Also, how many guns did you see, and how spread out were they?

The Captain nods, and replies,

"Err yes Colonel they're fairly large, I'm not even sure a melta bombs could bring the things down with whatever corruption they've worked on the things. As for the number of guns we saw maybe two quad-linked autocannons, and some ancient looking guns that were throwing up those black clouds, we saw a few of them loading shrapnel into some casings so I guess that is what brought down the dropship."

Once the assault begins the scouts are to kill anybody who attempts to operate the auto cannons from a nearby vantage point.

Its a jungle world for the most part, but it rains frequently so the jungle is going to be pretty hard to set on fire :P

Use napalm/promethium. Everything will burn down then.

Which will still completely fail to destroy a huge metal gun because a forest fire is not hot enough, and will force us to wait for hours or day.

On the other hand, falling out of a tree probably would do it.

That'd depend on how the guns built, if it has a solid bottom then it'd just drop and then be fine.

They're using ancient flak grenades. (At least that what I'm assuming the ancient black cloud cannons do.) These kind of ancient weapons, apparently with homemade shells, tend to be rather explosive.

Also, if the flak survives, but the operators don't, that's better for us. Loot ftw.
