After some waiting and some discussion, the portal still hasn't acted up again. You don't seem to be under pursuit, not at this very second, at least. So you decide to explore.
You follow the path down what seems to have been a main thoroughfare for the dead city; the street is wider than those that branch off of it, curves infrequently, and has taller buildings than the side streets. Or, rather, it
had taller buildings; time has brought most of them down to the same level, leaving you to infer the size of a building from how much rubble there is around it.
The road eventually ends at an intersection, and the path through the dust takes you into a slum, and then over it; here, the buildings were apparently built to last, and are still miraculously stable enough for you to walk across the roofs. At one point, the path in the dust leads you up to a small gap between two buildings and continues on the other side, but on both sides of the gap the path is less distinct; evidently a few of the people who had been here had elected to walk around. But as you look along the path- in both directions- you find a possible hint as to why. Namely, corpses.
Along the side path are a pair of corpses wearing alchemists' robes; across the gap, are the bones of several dead draco-hydras, and another skeleton wearing the robes of a Templar.
You continue past the small battlefield, and notice that the dust path is even less distinct than before- likely because there were less people who made it this far, judging by the skeletons. However, it's also easier to follow, because some bloodspots line it.
The path leads you right up to the waterfront, and the sight that greets you is somehow more amazing than the rest of your adventure. The ocean stretches ahead of you, every inch of it glowing a pale blue. Large vessels are visible in the water; they are like boats, but they have propellers on the front, or the top in some cases. You consider how odd it is that boats can still be mostly intact even after the sturdy buildings have collapsed.
You take in the sights as you walk along the dock, looking at these strange boats, but splashing noises ahead of you bring you to your senses.
A small family of Piscodemons drag themselves out of the water; two onto the dock ahead of you, and two onto the nearby pier jutting into the water. They all turn to glare at you in eerie unison, and snarl, their intentions clear: "
kill".
