Noise
« on: July 15, 2013, 12:09:44 pm »

The wiki says that now only 5 jobs make noise, so there has been changes. but i remember that combat was a noise source and even the 'older versions' pages for noise don't list combat as a source.

i also couldn't find machinery on any of the different version pages...

Probably related to "awakened by noise" bad thoughts from certain activities and workshops being too near the dormatory.

My guess is that he wants clarification on what activities and workshops induce this bad thought.

the wiki used to say that mechanisms and fighting caused noise (and therefor negative thoughts to nearby sleeping dwarves). now it doesn't, and even the pages for older versions of DF no longer say anything about it. Evidently something has changed because workshops and many of the labors that used to cause noise now don't.
only:
    Digging - 8 tiles
    Wood cutting - 8 tiles
    Engraving - 4 tiles
    Fortification carving - 4 tiles
    Removing constructions - 8 tiles

i was wondering if anyone had noticed anything or knew more about this than i did. i don't remember any changes to noise from the devlogs... and i tried searching the forums for info but i can't find it.

Awakened by noise, is most often the result of a howling ghost. Howlers are fairly common, more common than murderous ghosts, at least in my experience, and they seem to rile up the whole fort.

The other big culprit is smoothing stone.

Apparently, smithing armor and weapons is totally silent.

I don't think that it's silent, it's just they like to listen to the sound of smithing when they sleep. The same thing goes for torturing goblins I believe.

Does that mean you shouldn't listen to my pervious sentence and infact listen to everything I say?

It's like Joe Pesci sleeping in jail in that movie.  So it must be true.

seriously tho?! no one knows anything about whether or not clanging of axes and hammers on the surface or the grinding of gears, waterwheels and pumps can cause noise?

It would seem no, nobody knows. I can honestly say, it doesn't seem to be a problem. I haven't had problems with it, nor does anyone else it seems.
I'd say don't worry about it.

Edit: Or do science.

Oh, wait. Sorry, I forgot that dwarven smiths don't actually hit the metal that they're working--they just glare at it until it assumes the desired shape.

I thought they put their fire retardant beard on top of the metal and hammered away. The beard cushions the blow enough so it doesn't make the clanging sound but not enough to interfere with shaping of metal.

I can't comment on the state of the current wiki page on noise, but I was under the impression that the old noise page was complete speculation.
