Libraries in cities.
« on: July 15, 2013, 10:50:25 am »

I just came across this thread on Reddit that describes a history of a dragon family from a world over 2000 years old.

http://en.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/1ibcb1/what_is_the_longesthistory_world_ever_generated_i/

My suggestion is such:

Add libraries to various settlements of different races that contains books detailing this sort of things from world history for our adventurers to find.

Quite so.

Bloat185, LIBRARIES, (Future): Books and libraries utilizing histories. Once these are in, people that you chat with don't need to know as much. You can find legends here that reveal locations of ruins made by world gen, or your dwarf games. Various other books are possible.

That's not proper fantasy. All that original stuff...

DF's a cheap generic fantasy universe generator, after all.

public libraries don't fit the medieval atmosphere, for books very expensive and rare until late.

Public lending libraries don't fit, it's true, but scholars' libraries and thieves' guild libraries and Great Library of Alexandria-style edifices do fit the fantasy genre. Where else does the generic fantasy hero find out about The Great Evil That Almost Ate The World 10,000 Years Ago?

Temples and Keeps should also have librairies.
-Temple: books about theology, very old history (first days of the creation), alchemy and propheties.
-Keep: books about history and law (penal code, tax and the like).

I do like the idea of libraries, but I wish that not all books were artifacts. What's a library worth if you can't burn it to the ground and make the river flow black with ink?

Monasteries also had big libraries.

OT: come to think of it, monasteries would be pretty great. Started to imagine some name of the rose -scenarios right away...

The various groups of religions and such could finance books on their deities to spread the faith. Likewise there would be books on governments, on laws, and when members of other civs read these, they might bring these new ideas to their home.

I could also fancy a taming library saving the different animals you've acquired over the years. In game terms it could be something like a library liasion showing up at your fortress. He is willing to share copies of his books with you (bringing you new skills on animals) while you have to hand him books on domesticating for instance Giant Keas.

So why would you not trade with this guy? Perhaps other FUN civs could seize the library and learn the secrets stored within the halls of leather and paper. Also if you would add a university of smithing, you could learn to produce exotic goods, but possibly spreading knowledge to other non-dwarven civs as well.
