My duchess is easily my favorite dwarf. She's legendary in at least five skills, including weaponsmithing and armorsmithing, she produced my commander's artifact candy pick, she lost an arm and a leg in a rutherer training accident, she ousted the mayor and claimed the title for herself, and as if that weren't enough, she's apparently stopped making production mandates altogether. It's been maybe five years since the last mandate, and since I don't have a king (low-ish pop cap), it's been a huge convenience. Could it be that she's finally decided we have enough picks and leather armor? Somehow I doubt that. Does anyone have any idea what happened?

By the way, it may be relevant that the fortress is quite old, over 40 years, and the duchess was infected with an FB syndrome which put her in a permanent state of dizziness. She was infected within a few years of the time she stopped giving mandates, but I don't remember which came first or if there were any mandates after the infection.

I'm a newb to the game but from my experience I would lock her in a room before she goes berserk.

Sometimes dwarves just stop giving mandates, I am fairly sure I have had a baron go over a year without giving a mandate.  The dizziness might have something to do with it, I have always wanted to see if a permanently sleeping baron would still give mandates but have so far been unable to engineer a non fatal long nap.

Forgotten beast extract is the way to go, or make use of evil weather, if possible.

You want one that has a dizzy or sleepy inducing syndrome. Once afflicted, the sleepy/dizzy should take effect, and keep them in bed continuously.

The only other alternative is to drop things on their heads and savescum.

Absolutely nothing short of death will stop a noble from giving mandates.

There is a limit, I think, to the number of mandates a noble will give.  Also, if their soul attributes have them as "Not very demanding" they will give fewer mandates.

If she didn't stop making mandates she's taken quite a long hiatus. It's been two more years without one since I posted the question, making around seven total. You think it's just that she's all mandated out? She finally ran out of ideas after thirty years of requesting nothing but leather armor and picks?

As for soul attributes, she's not "not very demanding," but she's quite a head case. To pick some highlights, she's "frequently depressed," "unassertive" (is this the same category as "not very demanding?"), "uncomfortable with change," "she does not feel effective in life," and "she is getting used to tragedy."

While I haven't modded, maybe a syndrome you can transmit to the baron which causes necromancy (removing the need for food/drink) and makes them sleep all the time would work. I don't know how either part would be implemented however.

I just noticed my duchess is not meeting with diplomats or outpost liaisons, either. It turns out I currently have four liaisons and a human diplomat on my map. I can only assume it's the dizziness syndrome. I'd like to be able to test that. Is there a way to use dfhack to cure syndromes?

I don't think directly, but one of the scripting interfaces might be able to.

Well, the duchess, still dizzy, just met with one of the liaisons. I suppose that's good.

Correction, she just met with all four liaisons in sequence.

My money's on the "getting used to tragedy" part. It is my unscientific experience, that mandates are tied to happiness (less happy = more mandates). Getting used to tragedy reduces or negates some bad thoughts. Maybe also the will to mandate?
