No cavern animals
« on: July 14, 2013, 07:39:00 pm »

Is it normal to not have anything spawning underground? I breached the 1st and 3rd caverns and so far the only thing that appeared down there was a forgotten beast that met a pitiful end to a recruit armed only with a shield.

Can anyone give us a clue as to why the caverns are extinct? I regularly get surface animals migrating in and out but not a single sign of life has been spotted in the caves.

How thoroughly have you explored the caverns?  Many cavern animals kinda stay in one spot and don't wander around like surface animals.  Are there plants down there or do you just have mud?  Sometimes cavern layers are created devoid of plant life and one would assume that this would lead to a lack of critters.

I have thoroughly explored the 1st cavern to the point there isnt anything left to find. I also have all of the 3rd cavern that isnt blocked by water which is about half the map and I found the 2nd cavern. I also used reveal with dfhack the units list still has nothing other than those annoying parakeet men. Even manually scanning the caverns with v(on the off chance that the units list bugged) comes up with nothing. All the caverns are full of plants but no animals.

Dfhack has a command region-pops which might assist in determining if you truly have no cavern life.  I have no real idea how the command works, but I was able to make it print out a list of what might be all the critters (and plants and bugs) in the regions attached to my fort.

You might just have unexciting caverns which means you will have to dig deeper to find sufficient fun.  Or kill everyone and start over somewhere else.  Or both.

Thing is I am at the magma sea and 2 candy have been found. There is no where deeper to go other than the most Fun there is.

How unfortunate. According to that dfhack thing there are no animals in the caverns at all. However there are "innumerable" mussels in the river that have magically been fished to extinction by my fisher dwarves. But I might (eventually) find some Giant Toads since there are apparently 10 of those somewhere in the region. Went ahead and gave the cave dragons and a couple others a population boost above 0. If they start trickling in then we will know that it actually works.

There is some kind of upper cap how many animals/herds there can be simulatiously in your map. If there is much animals in surface, caverns can be pretty dull.

But the thing is even when there is the lull on the surface when the current herds left there is nothing in the caverns. Based on region-pops the caverns are just lifeless at my site and nearly lifeless in the region as a whole.

After boosting the regions helmet snake and cave dragon populations I almost immediately had a cave dragon and helmet snake enter the caves. So to everyone that has extinct caves, just increase the cavern animal populations with region-pops incr <TOKEN> <factor>. That should bring life to the lifeless caverns.
