Human Hostages
« on: July 14, 2013, 07:38:25 pm »

I have recently used a squad of speardwarves to clean out a human fortress. I plan on converting it into a dwarf fortress. There is only one problem:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My dwarves have slaughtered everyone in the fortress...with the exception of civilians. My dwarves refuse to put the Lady, or her wards, into a cage. I don't want to execute them, but it seems like one of my only options.

What should I do with them?

Have them grow beards and convert to alcoholism.

Wait, Whaaat? How did You embark on top of a Human Fortress? D'You reckon it'd be possible to do it playing as Humans? Are You from the future, where Dwarf Fortress is closer to completion?

It's a mod. It's called JustEmbark.

Also, I think I'm going to do some !!SCIENCE!! with them. Can I convict them of crimes? Can I order them to be slaughtered at the butcher's shop? Do they need to eat? These are just some of the questions I am going to try to answer.

House arrest is an easy option. I convicted a diplomat of murder, however it seems Dwarves refuse to enact justice upon foreigners as of yet. You cannot slaughter them, that is for filthy elves. They will feed themselves [that is, as far as you're concerned they will never hunger].
You can lock all of their doors shut. Make no mistake in telling them clearly: This is now Dwarf territory.

The solution is relatively simple. Hold them as captives, perhaps behind a door or some other object, and provide them with rudimentary furniture and meagre rations. Now, for phase two, go to war with their civilization. When the Humans attack, have them thrown off the battlements as an example. Also, thanks for the mod name, I'll definitely be playing it.

Use them to test the survivability of humanoid creatures when flung from high altitude using a bridge.

Have them play a game of drownball.  It is cheep, easy and leaves intact corpses to keep the hauling jobs to a minimum.

It's faster to write "!!science!!" than any of the synonyms: "mad science", "dwarvern science", or "crimes against the laws of god and man".

If you want to cage them, use webbed traps or cave-in dust.

Wherever you can manage to confine the humans, build a danger room (cover the floor with spike traps made with wooden training spears). Use the danger room to train them up and use them as a security force.

Loyalty sworn from the point of a sword is worth little. There'll come a time where they may turn against you.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
