Chances of getting a vampire
« on: July 14, 2013, 03:05:50 pm »

I was playing a fairly difficult embark, 3 goblin forts and a necro tower nearby, as a test for certain military things. I got two vampires, both of which died bravely defending my other dwarves from the unstoppable waves of undead. If I embark on the same tile, but move the local thing over a little bit, will I have a significantly reduced chance of getting more vampires, since two are dead? Or is the number of vampires in a 125 year old world large enough that 2 deaths won't have a big impact?

the frequency of vampires migrating to forts was significantly reduced at some point. If you already had 2, there are probably many more. There is no way to easily tell though, and it's quite random

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

You could use LegendsViewer to check how many dwarven vampires are there in your world, all of them have a chance to migrate to your fort.

If you want more you could play as an adventurer, get a backpack full of any vampire blood retire in a town and leave the backpack there, then create as many dwarven adventurers as you want and have them drink the blood, wait until they turn and retire. All your retired dwarven adventurers also have a chance to migrate to a future fort.

don't they have to be a member or in the territory of your home civ?

Can vampirism be transferred for example by stabbing bolts into a vampire to get them covered in his blood and then shooting people with said bolts? Would that work to the same purpose.

I always enjoy getting those immigrants that are like "I can make soap and potash and lye and cheese and-" then I cut them off with a "Hope you like bricks!" as I turn them into a mason.

I don't think so. I'd guess it needs to be ingested

The age of world affects a lot to vampire frequency. In very young worlds (<100 years) there may be very few vampires, since hiistorical figures haven't yet started to "extend their lifespan by any means" and eventually profane temples, which causes them to be cursed to vampires. A good length of history is 100-300.

No, when vampires first came out there was a thread about how vampires worked, one of the assumptions was they had to belong to your home civ, but I checked myself a few games where I got vampire migrants and in Legends mode they could be settled in other dwarven civs, even human towns, as long as they were dwarves they could migrate to your fortress.

and retired adventurers? It would be interesting to see if the game classifies them as retired adventurers first and vampires second or the other way around
