My dwarves are becoming teetotalers.
« on: June 13, 2008, 12:07:00 am »

Wtf. I have tons of alcohol, all of which is perfectly available, and I get messages that dwarves have died because they fancied some carp flavored water.

I mean seriously, what the hell is wrong with them? No, they aren't injured.

Additional question: Do thieves bypass cage traps for some reason? Because the only entrance to my base is through an unbroken line of loaded cage traps, and yet I still get thief alerts from the inside.

Are the dwarves injured or in prison?

If so, you need to make sure you have buckets (to take water to injured dwarves). Alcohol stockpiles directly next to imprisoned dwarves are also a good idea, along with food stockpiles.

If not.. perhaps you've reached the dwarven apocalypse.

Good luck with that.

Maybe the dwarfs are trying to get buckets of water to give to the injured or imprisoned? In that case, your dwarfs are actually performing Health Care labor, which is another sign of the apocalypse.

You're pretty much done for.

XD. I said in the original post that no one was injured. No one's in prison either, so... Apocalypse, then, huh? Well shit.

And yes, kobolds dodge traps. Goblins don't, though, so every once in a while you may see that you've acquired another goblin.

Could water source zones and "Prefer zone drinking"-option affect the dwarfs?

Maybe you just make so horrible booze that even dwarfs don't want to drink it? Quite an accomplishment.

I'm reasonably sure that would involve Austin Powers' coffee. Maybe they'd even drink that if it had a high enough alcohol content.

Yeah, I've been trying to zone them to a safe water source for a while, with "Zone-Only Drinking" but they insist on getting eaten by carp.

I can handle a few losses, though. Now I have a more pressing question:

I was trying out an underground trading depot set up, and it worked, but now the merchants won't leave. Like, they got in, unloaded everything, and "departed" but they've been sitting on that same spot for a season now and I don't know why.

Did the way out somehow become blocked?

I dunno. You could just murder them with ballastae if you have to.

A tree could have grown on their original way in's path... do you remember their route in? I've found that if they came from the east and the east is now blocked they'll sit there even if north/south/west are open.

...Corc. You're my hero.

A single tree had grown some two screens north of my fort. I cut that down and they were out in a flash.

You didn't keep em around for extra protection?

Eclose a caravan into a giant "cage" so that their soldiers can still rush out when enemies invade. Not that I've done it...

They quickly go insane. If you're lucky it's a murderous one because then they still fight. If it's melancholy they just stand around. No experience with anything else.
