Joe, sensing danger, forgoes magic in favor of old-fashioned violence.  He charges Xantalos and swings the book at him.  Xantalos can't quite dodge, but the blow is so terrible that Joe falls over.  Xantalos sees his chance to strike back with magic.

A tiny puff of sawdust shoots straight forward about six inches and dissipates.    Well, magic has failed, so why not a kick to the family jewels?  He aims a stomp.
