He seems to want to promote a dragon to the throne. Past that, who knows?

I suspect a trick- I think he might be a manipulative sob that's playing on our 'draconic pride', ('Oh, not a dirty anthropoid, (which I adore), only a dragon can lead'), to get something out of us. If he's some kinda seer like at oblivion's start, yeah I could see his trust being placed in us like this, but not otherwise.

Who in their right mind would put their trust in an immortal convict over (for an example befitting the king's situation) a trusted, honorable general they've known for literally their entire life?

(pointing out again, he contradicts himself by loving his anthropoids but not trusting them to lead)

His proffered reason is to 'fend off the demons', which is probably a suicide mission so that he can actually get to his bunker. But I'm not ruling out ulterior motives, we just got here.

Why would he then appoint us as his heir? For that matter, why is he retreating to the bunker?

1. To entice us not to look the gift horse in the mouth. Dangle the carrot in front of us, so to speak.
-We aren't his heir if we're dead, or if he's alive, for that matter.
2. It seems this is something of a big, civilization-ending event. And he lived through the last one so, methinks he has experience.

2. And a thousand years more to gather strength since. He's lived through this once, hasn't he? Can't he do it again?

He might be in the process of doing just that- living through it again. For all we know it's like some old testament shit, where the earth erupts and demon-spawn blot out the sun for 100 days.

Why would that make him flee this time if he lived through the last?

If he lived through the last one by hiding in a similar fashion. Round two, and he's had time to prepare a luxury bunker.

I suppose there's no way to prove it either way, except a feeling that he wouldn't, likely caused in part by him boasting about having lived through the previous one.

Pfft, who would be around to correct him? It was a millenium ago- he could claim he cleaved swathes of the vile things from the skies for 50 days and 50 nights before even breaking a sweat, and for all we knew he did.

Question: what kind of mortality rate would it take to undo all technological advances? 60%? 80%? 90+?

Meanwhile, some facts:

He's 'trapped' in this city.
The demons will be able to break in. From the sounds of it, quickly, if not many would be able to get to that chamber in time.
That means demon power > jlez power
For some reason, I'm actually inclined to believe he's trapped here.


As for his sickness, all we have as evidence is:

'Respiratory distress'
'Old' appearance

As for his age & death, all we have as evidence is:

---We don't know how long dragons normally live, aside from his behavior & his inferences.



Theories:
He's trapped here, and for this reason he can't get to his bunker. Therefore, he needs to wait until the barrier falls before making his escape, and it's for this reason he's hoping we'll hang around and be heroic.

Alternative:
He's not actually trapped, but claims to be since it keeps him near the bunker and absolves him of other responsibilities. Strange that he's not actually in his bunker though.

Helping him seems like the best idea.  Even if he's using us, there IS still apparently a demonic horde about to kill everything, so might as well milk him for all the resources he's got. 

Agree, but ask the golden dragon for information on the city, all its resources and inhabitants, as well as what he knows of the strength of the demons.

Well, a baseline for the strength of demons: how would you go about getting out of this city? Want to try the death-barrier? How about fighting your way out, if you had to?
The demons are going to tear through the barrier and defenders before many can get to the bunker.

I'd wager it's billions of ground creatures, if many cities will fall just today- explains why our node was in the shape it was, (pristine).

As for inhabitants, resources, information...I don't think that'll matter for much longer; the demons are showing up today. Prossibly before we're done with our conversation, if experience in pop-culture media tells me anything.

I'd like more info on the demons- how long they'll be around, exactly what their little visit entails. If he's not going to be around, what to do once they've retreated, (tips; who to look for, any artifacts put in place to be activated after these mass extinction events, etc).


I have my doubts about how much help we can actually give.
