Every source of fiction I know of has dwarfs that simply won't back down against horrible doomy things, especially when they've got good weaponry.

"Too dumb to flee" indicates a very DF feeling.
And actually, many dwarves do flee. It's just that they usually don't have far to flee. Often, when dwarves are attacked, they're like rats in a corner; it comes with their choice of abode.
