Getting dwarves to use barrels?
« on: October 20, 2007, 08:15:00 pm »

Does anyone have a good method to force dwarves to place barrels in food stockpiles more quickly?

I have SCORES of barrels, but the idiot dwarves keeps stacking harvested crops 1 high, quickly filling up my food stockpile.  THEN they don't harvest, since technically the stockpile is full.  This is frustrating.

I have plenty of barrels, like I said.

I know how min/max barrels work on stockpiles, that's not the issue.

I have ZERO reserved barrels, that's not the issue.

How can I coax my dwarves into consolidating food stockpiles into barrels more quickly?

Do you allow empty barrels to be stocked in your food stockpiles?

Change settings on the food pile, enable Furniture, block all, then select barrels under type and wood under materials.

As I understand it, dwarves will add only one empty barrel to a stockpile at a time.  So try turning your single stockpile into several.

build a kitchen and make some lavish meals, in addition to happiness this allows you to combine 4 food stacks into one, just make sure you have spare seeds

That is true if you don't allow barrels as "furniture" in the settings.
