My military is exceptionally talented...
« on: July 11, 2013, 05:24:57 pm »

How does one rest while training? Was he sleep walking, and then he walked into the barracks and was like "snore snore stab"?

But seriously, what is happening?

He's the Chosen One, and they are uploading combat skills directly into his mind.

I've seen this happen when a dwarf with low endurance engaged in an individual combat drill and got exhausted. They just 'rest' for a bit to recover and then continue with their drill. The one case where it happened regularly was with a marksdwarf who had no melee skills and presumably trained dodging when doing Individual Combat Drill. I've no idea if it's dodging training that's particularly taxing or if it's just a problem with flimsy military dwarfs.

I've seen it after sparring sessions, though I couldn't tell you if the dwarves were unarmed at the time and therefore more likely to be doing the more tiring wrestling moves.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

This is probably it, since the dwarf is fat and tires very quickly.

I've seen a recruit who passed out from exhaustion during sparring. I sent him into super-soldier program to become Captain Armok (i.e. pump operating gym).

Would throwing them in a swimming pool raise their endurance any faster? Assuming they didn't need the strength.

Swimming training would work, but it would be slow. Make a dwarf operate pump for a half year and he will be nigh-maxed in every physical attribute.

From personal experience, I can tell you that I once did pushups for 45 minutes.  While asleep.

Basic training is a strange, strange place in life.

Think I'm gonna test this out :) (I believe you, I just mean I'm gonna do it)

I think that was nerfed/fixed via recent versions... So i doubt it actually still works now, Good luck though.

I'll look it up. Thanks for telling me so I didn't sit there for four (game) years wondering why it's not working heheh.

Yes, pump operating only seems to train endurance now (i think it's endurance - got a dwarf from 'tires very quickly' to 'tires slowly' just by pumping air; other attributes stayed the same for years), which isn't particularly valuable. The combat-relevant attributes strength, agility, toughness and willpower are best trained by combat/sparring.

Endurance training _does_ enable dwarfs to do strenous work longer without becoming 'exhausted', which in peace times seems to be limited to military training and - pump operating (dwarf cancels operate pump: too exhausted).
