Yeah they don't always ask for reasonable counter offers. In fact I have yet to see it happen.

What was even worse was that that deal ended up with them getting over ten thousand monies worth of profitsss.  (No that's not a typo, just a really bad reference which I'm sure someone on this forum will get.)  I of course canceled, and redid it giving them just bellow three thousand, which they were quite happy with.

I think you miscalculated your results there.

3. puddle of magma where your depot and trade goods used to be


A much more effective method is

1. Traders make counteroffers
2. Leave the Depot, muttering angrily
3. Pull Lever
4. Watch Depot and traders plummet 10 levels down to their deaths
5. Profit

It's a bit more complicated, but much more effective.

they'll do it with less than 50% gain?They never traded  anything with less profit, I think. And the counteroffer is always 100% profit. (Vanilla DF)
I always give them the closest amount to 50% value as profit. I DO get better in simple math-stuff ^^...

Also relevant - I can really get awesome amounts of stuff by filling their capacity with eye-candycancer MICROCLINE stuff? Good to know ><

Wait, are you trying to convince people here that magma is not the best option? I'm not sure I understand where you are going with this... *utterly confused by the lack of magma in your suggested "improved" plan*
Unless you mean having them pummel 10 levels down to their fiery magma death? Or having magma drop 10 levels down to pummel them to death? I'm certain that magma is the best solution here, somehow, and refuse to accept any other means of profit-making ^^

Water's very good for removing caravans. I mean, my fort in dorf heaven spent the first seasons getting an elf drowner operational instead of making trade goods, with the aim of killing the elves, eating their animals, and selling their crap to the humans and dwarves to ease production.

Shit. I don't think I remember how to MAKE a fort profitable without constant goblin sieges and ambushes providing trade goods and raw materials.

I wish I could get a goblin siege.  The one time I did recently, I forgot to close my gate, so my drowninator was rendered useless.

My god, you people are evil.

My dwarves are well fed, because I buy all the exotic food and drink I can buy. I pay for this by... forcing some dwarves to slave in the workshops, where they pump out thousands of dwarfbucks worth of trade goods. I usually buy everything the traders offer, minus the trinkets and unwearables.

The downside is if I somehow miss a caravan (either due to seige, or forgetting to lower my floodgates to let the merchants in my fortress) my fortress quickly overflows. The upside for the workerdwarfs is while I wait for the next caravan, they get to party in the mess hall for a few months.

I'm a hedonist. I guess this is reflected somewhat in the lifestyle of my fortress inhabitants.
