Giant trees?

I may be late to the news, so I want to ask to see if I got that right...
Some trees will be 30 squares across... so 30 wide...

Are we getting Yggdrasill like trees now? Because if so, GOD YES, I want a fort built on it.

If anyone can clarify how big they are or if I am wrong, would be appreciated.

Yeah, you really are pretty late to the news...

Go and read this.

And yes, trees are spanning multiple z-levels now. I've understood that not every tree is 30 z-levels, only the greatest elven trees. Most trees will probably be 5-15 z-levels high.

Toady did mention that it was the largest ones. And honestly I would feel shocked if all trees were suddenly that big.

Hopefully they can fit a fort.

How am I a filthy elf? I am hollowing one of the greatest and ancient of trees for fun and profit!

Question, will mining out the roots of a tree kill it? Will mining out the roots be an alternative to tree farms as a source of wood?

Our last WoT on roots was "Undecided, no timeline."  Toady may have done work with roots since then, but who knows.

The newest uodate mentions that dwarves cutting down trees is one of the things left to do before moving on to dwarf sites.

What I'm interested in are the new fruit trees and whether we'll be able to plant trees in the next version. And what skills those use. Active forestry would be huge for wood-scarce biomes and for those of us who take their time getting to magma.

Planting trees is one of the things Toady has specifically mentioned NOT going into the upcoming release.  It would be amazing though.  However, at this late stage in the game, it seems unlikely that he'll add another significant bloat.

That might cause some unusual problems, but it also sounds likely.
It might lead to a situation where, instead of the tree falling over when it got chopped, it would just fall down a z level.

Intelligent is a strong word to use around DF.
