"Nah, nothing is that complicated. We just don't know each other that well yet. And then it won't be that complicated!" she replied with a grin.

Sia smiled beside herself. Catherine had a certain infectious joy...an innocence, that had remained untarnished even in these horrible times.

She thought if there was any future for the world, people like her would be ones to make it better than what came before.

~Interlude: Laugh Out Loud~

With not too many hours left in the day, the group heads back to the city to rest for the night. Voss ends up taking all but one set of fragmented horns, Joe's demon head, and the pristine demon horns. Catherine is rather cold in ignoring Danath's request for them, but there really aren't that many extras.

You find room and board in the residential district- Haven doesn't let its people go hungry or cold if it can help it, even if they don't have any money. That's not to say the accommodations are especially fancy, somewhat thin fabric and vegetable soup, but they're rather nice for being free.

Sia rested against a wall, trying to move the fingers in her hand-which felt very stiff...and cold. Not the sort of cold she enjoyed, not a frosty snow sheen. Just the absence of life. A yawning void, holding her life energy is some sort of horrible stasis. It was bothering her...it was always bothering her. In fact, every second of every hour of every day it was on her mind. It might drive a lesser woman mad...but, she believed she was made of sterner stuff.

She resolved to visit a higher power, later that day. The mysterious Queen of Ice...where Sia all but dabbled in the element, this being was supreme. Perhaps she would help. Any cost would be nothing compared to the price of doing nothing.

Sia turned to Catherine.

"Hmm. Can I have that pair of demon's horns I froze, Catherine? I'm going to visit someone who might appreciate a gift of a sort. It's a minor gift, but it means something.

Anyway, you're free to come along if you've no problem with the cold..."

Action: After we've decided on a course of action, I'll pay a visit to the Queen of Ice and explain my situation...present the pair of frozen demon horns as a symbolic gift.
Early next morning, you set out to the Queen of Ice. The journey takes a few hours, but the dirt road is flat and smooth enough. The temperature drops rapidly as you complete the last few dozen feet, entering an unnaturally small circle of snow-covered ground around the lair of the Queen of Ice.

Her abode itself looks very much like a miniature mountain of snow, perhaps four stories tall, with a mound perhaps half that overlapping it. Irregularly placed windows, little celtic crosses of dark blue ice shrouded by rounded overhangs, generously denote it as a structure rather than a simple pile.

The elaborate double doors are located under an eave on the smaller mount, on the side opposite the larger one. They are delicately carved (or perhaps formed, being solid ice) into scenes of frost-themed creatures and shapes- waves, clouds, shaggy things humanoid and not... and of course, demons writhing in icy pain.

The door is "guarded" by a rather unhappy-looking man, bundled in furs and slouched against the door. A sheathed sword hangs at his side. He either doesn't notice you approaching or doesn't care.

"Well, then! I will be sure to take you up on your offer at some point! Here we go..."

Turn in enough fragments of the horns to complete our quest, depending on which of the other stuff people decide to turn in. Keep the rest for enchanting purposes. Keep whichever horn is least broken, for sure.

Find a spot to store the demon corpse and most of the horns. Find some sort of gathering-place and go there, with whichever horn was least fragmented and my demon-seeking rock. Boats of my achievements, including making these rocks on the fly to throw at the demons (although, sadly, most were damaged to the point of uselessness) and enchanting another rock to explode and using it against a demonic warrior to destroy it in a single blow. Also boast of the achievements of the rest of my team.
You're not sure where to store the demon corpse, so you end up leaving it outside the city, hopefully out of sight. Taking it into the city would require some paperwork and might not be approved.

[3] You simply stand in the middle of the street in the market district, boasting about your sundered horns and demonslaying stone.

[1] A warrior clad in what looks like black bones begins openly laughing at you. This has got to be the funniest thing he's seen all week.

Danath turned to face the rest of the group
"Can I Have one of the intact demon horns?  I want to try and improve my spear."

If given, try and attach the horn to the spear end.  If that fails, try and find somewhere to sell the horn and buy a decent spearpoint.
Catherine flees. :(

"I'm hoping we'll all meet later and head out to the sinkholes after I'm done with my bit of personal business."
"I'm ready to aid anyone who is my friend, you know."

Catherine caught a glimpse of what Sia was hiding--a sign of frostbite maybe? Unsure as she was, it was best not to prod on matters like that and personal stuffs unless she felt it was right, and the person she was talking to got the note and felt it was right.

Maybe it was time for some hot chocolate all around. Everyone loves chocolate, right?

Quote
"...It's complicated."
"Nah, nothing is that complicated. We just don't know each other that well yet. And then it won't be that complicated!" she replied with a grin.

Someone's totally going to enjoy some chocolate.

And so Catherine stole away from the group to get part of her rations as the best chocolate (or hot chocolate drink, whichever any generous soul would offer) out there.

...They did serve rationed chocolate, right?!

Turns out chocolate is a rare delicacy, and neither part of your rations nor something you can easily trade for.

Rest my wounds while others figure out what we do next.
Some hot meals and a good night's rest does wonders for your wounds.

Both could have been nicer, though.

Sia is off to visit the Queen of Ice, while Halfred boasts and is mocked in the market district. Everyone else is still milling about in or outside their pity room in the residential district.

~Interlude: Mass Production~

"I am glad you found my prose entertaining!"

Enchant as many of the following items as possible with the demon remains, until it is all used up:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Dispose of anything left of the demon corpse. Legally.
You quickly leave and locate the demon corpse, still where you left it.

Unfortunately, that makes where you left it about as secluded as you can hope for, so you just sort of begin there.

Eye of Demons. Well, let's see...

[2-2+2] You try to fuse demon essence into a stone to react to demon essence, but just sort of melt a bunch of stuff. Oops.

Stout Striking Staff. You lack any appropriate wood! You could try forming the demonstuff into a staff, but you're not sure what magic that'd use.

Demonseeking Throwing Rock. Should be-

[6+2-1] You successfully fuse the essence of a demon into a rock, so that it will seek out demons of similar stuff. Unfortunately you may have put ever so slightly too much power into it, as its visible red cracks now glow with barely restrained power. You're not sure how safe it is to jostle.

+Dangerously Overloaded Demonseeking Throwing Stone!

Stone Robes. You're not sure how infusing demon clay into your robes would make them like armor, or perhaps more accurately you're not sure how you'd do so or with what magics.

Superior Striking Staff. As there was no wood, there is no Striking Staff.

Another New Demonseeking Throwing Rock.

[1+2-1] You make another pile of melty red goo.

Shocking Striking Staff. You know the drill.

Ring of Invisibility. You lack a ring, and aren't sure how to fashion demonclay into one either.

Third Demonseeking Throwing Rock.

[2+2-1] It comes out a bit weaker than you'd have preferred.

+Weak Demonseeking Throwing Rock (-1 Crushing, +1 vs Soldier Demons at close range)

Mounteback's Cloak. You might or might not have a cloak, but more importantly you're not even sure what school teleportation magic would fall under.

Don't Actually Know. Well, maybe that's for the best, considering your efforts thus far have yielded a weak demonseeking rock, a dangerously unstable demonseeking rock, and two piles of ugly goo.

"Sir, I seek an audience with the Queen of Ice." Sia announces boldly.

She wondered why the Queen couldn't afford a more estoeric guard...
The man glares up at you irritably, grumbling a "Yeah yeah" as he stands up. He opens the door, enters, and shuts it behind him. You can hear him through it, however, droning unconvincingly and quickly through what sound like rote lines.

"Great Ice Queen Lady of All Cold you have a visitor."

You can't make out a response, but a moment later he opens the door and jerks his thumb inside. You enter, he leaves, and the door shuts.

The inside is formed of a deep blue ice and pure white snow, vaguely artistic but still essentially a natural ice cavern with a lot of windows. The Ice Queen sits upon the only real structure in the building, a throne sitting atop a rather steep set of steps, raising her far above ground level. Her entire being, eyes, hair, skin, dress, are all the same pale bluish white. She's quite beautiful, and could make a very convincing snow statue.

Probably not the most pleasant of thoughts at the moment.

Before you have a chance to do much, there's a loud cheeping noise, and a sky blue bird, much paler than the surrounding walls, flutters in front of your face.

"State your name!" it chirps rapidly, almost frantically, while hovering in place with rather loud wingflaps.

The Ice Queen appears to be smiling on her throne, but says or does nothing.

((Dammit :I

...Goodluck Sia.

Hope you're ok.

((I'm usually on forsaken's server when I do play. Hard to predict when that is, though...))

You help Halfred's self esteem, though he doesn't appear to need your help moving the body.

He might need the boost after ripping parts of the demon off and then melting them into a fused mass with some rocks, though.

Search for a tree no one would mind if I took a branch off of. Probably a dead one.

Remove a good-sized branch from it.

Make the Shocking Striking Staff.

Stare at the piles of molten goop for inspiration on how to do better in the future.

~Interlude: Lock and Key~

"My name is Sia. I've come to offer my service to the Ice Queen, and beg a boon of her.

I present this gift-hoping what it lacks in worth, it makes up for in symbolism."
She says.

Sia presents the frozen solid demon horns.
The bird flies off, up, and hovers closer to the Ice Queen's level in the center of the chamber.

"Presenting Lady Sia," it chirps in the same frantic voice, now tinged with formality, "here bearing gifts for her supreme majesty, the Queen of Ice!"

It then flutters back down, snatches the horns, and flies up to drop them into the Ice Queen's hands. Her face lights up at them.

"How wonderful!" she beams, passing them back to the bird, who flutters behind her throne with them. "It's always nice to see these nasty creatures receiving the doom of frost they so richly deserve.

Now then, what have you come to ask of me?"

[5] You manage to find a rather large grove of trees. Some of them even have branches sawn off. Clearly this is a good place to find branches.

Unfortunately there's a tall man in leather armor leaning against a tree looking at you suspiciously. You kind of get the feeling he's in charge.

Or in a gang.

Work through some combat drills with my spear.  If possible, spar with one of the other soldiers to train my skills.
[2] Nobody's really interested, so you drill a bit yourself. Drills will only take you so far, though; to really improve, you've got to test your mettle against living adversaries.

Watch Halfred with amusement-play a quiet tune on my flute to waft in the nearest area which has...a good smelling odor just to pass the time.
[5] There's a tall man leaning against one of the trees Halfred is eying. He's almost glaring at Halfred, but he seems to glance ever so briefly in your direction with interest now and then.

Find a dead body I can steal borrow without anyone noticing so I can practice my necromancy.
Man, you know how hard it is to find dead bodies in Haven?

Yes, you do, because you're a necromancer. You've tried before.

Haven people are dicks. They keep all the bodies all locked up or somesuch and scream like they've seen a mouse any time someone with dark powers gets anywhere near them.

Plus, it's not like there's a lot of corpses in here to begin with. Most people left are pretty healthy, and most people who die to other means don't exactly leave a pristine corpse.

Sia holds up her 'ring' hand, with the creeping crystal curse upon it.

"As you can see, I have been afflicted with a powerful demonic curse-one that will wreak slow wrought destruction upon me and leave me at the mercy of one of the Demons fickle overlords.

I have come asking for help in removing this malady, or perhaps abating it's progress-at the very least, providing me a true death. I am willing to offer anything you want of me, if this be in the realm of your power."
