OK heres the details of my ram taken from CPU-Z

EDIT: Okay, so I created the txt.file, put it in the right location, pasted the links stuff in it, and saved it as a ruby file.
         What I don't know is where I should put the number of dwarves I want to embark with.

         It says this:# patch start dwarf count

         nr = $script_args[0].to_i

         raise 'too low' if nr < 7

         addr = df.get_global_address('start_dwarf_count')
         df.memory_patch(addr, [nr].pack('L'))

Right, so I got it working!

Here's an embark with 100 dwarves with 100 FPS

Here's the same thing, except with 200 dwarves.

Now, here's 300 dwarves.

All of them are staying at 100 FPS, except the one with 300 of them.

That stayed at 100 for a while then slowly descended to 90 where it stayed for a long while.

hmm yeah well.. but that aren't exactly large forts with tons of heavy CPU load going on ::)

I've experienced lag a couple of times, but I'm still not that far into things yet.. that was on a top configed laptop with ~150 dwarfs and ~20 zlevels

edit: oh and dfhack reveal on

Nothing is more graphical than a person's imagination, which is the graphics card that DF uses.

I wanted to test my limits, so I embarked with 500 dwarves.

It went well. At the start, the FPS quickly fell to 60, but then it climbed back up to 90.

I want to get to a thousand!  :D

Them standing around not doing much isn't going to cause a fraction of the load of a full functioning fortress years in with all kinds of jobs going on and pets running around, causing massive amounts of pathing calculations.

And that RAM is far slower than mine, so that seems unlikely to be what could be doing much. More likely it's your understand of what exactly is the difference between FPS and the game calculations per second. It's easy with a nice system to have high "smooth" fps, but the game calculations going down more and more as time goes on, causing each time tick to take longer and longer. In my experience it never doesn't run smooth, it just gets slower. FPS isn't the main issue, it's the number in the ( ) next to it. To be running at full speed as I understand it the numbers should be around 100. So unless they stay at 100 or greater, then you're getting the slowdown just the same as everyone else.

the number in <> is graphical FPS  while then umber outside is game speed. game speed reduction is what i think most people refer to with fps loss. So could you now reclaim your old fort set up a bunch to do and drag your items back in with 300 dwarves?

That fort was from an earlier version, so I can't reclaim it.

However, my currently largest fort has 139 dwarves. I'm removing the pop-cap to try and get more dwarves.

Your embarks don't show anything.

The main FPS drainer is the pathfinding algorithm, and that comes into action after a few years, when every dwarf got some labors enabled, has to move to workshops, needs a drink etc..

A fresh embark is not demanding at all, because your dwarves aren't doing anything.

Try making them all herbalists and designating the entire map for plant gathering, then get the numbers.

But first make a multi z-level labyrinth with water and magma flows.

I'll do that tomorrow, but it's off to bed for me now.

Why don't you get Moltenchannels from http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7802

That's an example of a large fortress. For me it runs between 15 and 25 FPS. Let us know how well that runs on your computer.

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.

Here's moltenchannels. FPS varies wildly, though i'd say that it is around 50-45 normally.
It sometimes descends into 40, but clibs back up quickly. Top amount is in the picture.

Open hell, I'd like to see how your computer deals with the pathing bottlenecks there.

As far as I can tell, it's much worse than regular pathfinding, maybe because even non-flying demons have to be forced up the tube somehow.

Edit: I see you had opened it once already. How was it at the moment of opening? Not after you've killed the initial demon surge (because FPS goes back to normal at that point), but that initial surge itself.
