I haven't had any FPS problems
« on: July 10, 2013, 02:42:36 pm »

So, I've seen a lot of people saying that once they get <100 dwarves the game slows down a lot.

I have a Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU with 2.83 GHz.

I have never had any problems with the speed of the gane. One of my fortresses had over 300 dwarves and two mist generators,
and the game ran very smoothly. I've also made numerous projects with water, like drowning rooms, artificial waterfalls and a doomsday device that can submerge the entire fortress.

Some more specs: 4 Gb RAM Windows 7 Ultimate and an Nvidia GeForce 9400.

Any idea why I'm blessed with the immunity of FPS problems?

Clearly you are the offspring of Armok, and this is his gift to you.

gfx card is irrelevant, primary considerations are the speed of your ram, the speed of your proc, the size of the cache's on your proc, and i am not sure how to asses this but the speed of said caches.

you've given us one stat, mind giving us the others?

On these complex maps, when you have it to show FPS and graphical report numbers, what do they say? Because your system sounds to be magical in some sense that can make the game engine perform in such a way as would seem to be impossible due to technical limitations.

I hate to be that guy, but, pic or didn't happen. :)

Define running smoothly.  50 FPS with over 300 dwarves would be considered good.  If you're getting 100+ with that same number, then just, wow.

I had exactly 323 dwarves + 20 animals, and the game ran at about 70 FPS, though it sometimes dip in the low 60s. I'm gonna upload a pic soon.

EDIT: That particular fortress was destroyed by HFS. I will however upload a pic of arena mode with lots of creatures.

Embark size?
Number of Z-levels below the surface?
Is Temperature enabled in the config?

Embark size?
I always embark with one vertical and horizontal row bigger then the normal.

Number of Z-levels below the surface?
About 70, plus caverns and HFS.
Quote
Is Temperature enabled in the config?
Yes.

Here are the pics.

As you can see, there are over 300 people there.

I can also spawn hundreds of more enemies for them to fight, with no change in FPS at all.
It's fun watching armies of hundreds of dwarves and goblins fight against eachother. :D

doesn't arena mode disable a bunch of things that are tracked in fortress mode? ok here is what your going to do. install df hack and get the script that allows you to embark with as many dwarves as you wish so this way you can instantly repopulate your fort.

running water?

Arena mode doesen't take much FPS. I just ran a test battle with 450 creatures with 108 FPS. But a FPS of 100 in a 300 dwarf fort is truly amazing. What kind of forts you usually build? I mean, do you atom smash much of the garbage and build minimalistic, or is your fort flooding with stuff? Mine largest fort had about 70 FPS with 230 dwarves. I had to use DFHack's clean-units and clean-items commands and set traffic zones to achieve that.

I tried copying the text from the link, creating a new text file in dipscript folder with that name, then pasting the text to the file.
But dwarf fortress says this: "One of the compressed files on disk has errors in it.  Restore from backup if you are able." Help?

As I said before, my RAM is 4.00 GB

I usually don't atom smash, since it feels cheating to me. Everything that can't be used efficiently in my fort, is either dumped into magma or traded away, so I have a pretty low amount of garbage.

that is not what your ram is just how much you have.

He want to know manufacturer and model. as well as rated speed and if you know hw to figure it out the timings.

Sorry i was in a rush and not very clear in the directions. first make a completely blank .txt file, preferably with something like notepad++ which i think has a linux distro. if using notepad++ it should autodetect it as a ruby file and will automatically save it with the .rb extension. if not you paste it inside the blank text file and when you save it you save it as startdwarf.rb or if you are forced to name it startdwarf.txt then you must rename it to startdwarf.rb this file must be placed in the \DF_Home_Directory\hack\scripts
