Look up the Unknown Menace. These people must be kind of incompetent if they really don't know anything about this menace, right? So there's gotta be some information.
Also, try to remember who we were married to, and at what age. And who our first serious lover was.
You use the console again, this time looking up the unknown menace.
As you trawl through the military files, you find that the enemy is truly unknown. The Vanguard military gave them the more apt name 'Alien Coalition' due to the dozens of races ((OOC: If someone could find where i stated the exact number of races in the Unknown Menace, that would be grand. I can remember and i cant find where i said it)) involved in its forces.
The military had tried to track their paths through Warp-space, and whilst the tracking was successful, whenever a military task force was sent to investigate, they found absolutely nothing. And, when they did find something it was usually abandoned. The enemy also always seems to know which parts of Vanguard space is the least defended.
Vanguard is utterly clueless about their enemy. They have never managed to capture one alive, they dont know where they originate from, the enemies tech always seems to disintegrate whenever captured and they leave no trace before or after an attack.
The lack of information, you see, is not for want of trying.; Vanguard is one of, if not the, most advanced faction in the known universe. They have technology that would make the Council Races green (or even more green) with envy. There are even rumours, according to some military reports, of some of the council races reverse engineering some captured Vanguard technology, with varying success.
You cannot gleam any more information about the Alien Coalition. You think that there may be more, but you dont have the clearance to access it.
Also look up the origins of Earth humans and Vanguard humans.
For a bit of light reading, you look up Earth Humans and Vanguard Humans.
Earth Humans are just that: 'Normal' humans who live on earth, still totally oblivious to any other alien race and living in splendid isolation...for now.
Vanguard humans, of which you are one, are part of a group that was once a private company, founded by a rich Yorkshire Family during the beginnings of the Industrial revolution in England, UK.
The Tolthorpe Family, an extraordinarily rich trading family, headed by a man named Richard Alexander Tolthorpe was an outspoken advocate of the sciences. They were intellectuals. They attracted and gathered together the greatest engineers and minds from all nations, regardless of politics. Eventually, this grew into a secretive intellectuals club after a few years.
After a decade, entire towns were built, even dedicated laboratories and engineering works were built, disguised from all who weren't 'in the know'.
By the year 1800, the club had become one of the largest companies in the world. Chartered by the British Royal Family, who were sponsors, they grew, guarding their knowledge and technology, which was expanding at an ever increasing rate. By the mid 1800's, they had already surpassed the technology level of the 21st century by far and by 1900 they were so far ahead they would be untouchable by any other Earth based factions.
However, they were benevolent. They helped people from the shadows. They suppressed undesirable technologies that could enslave or kill millions, and guided intellectuals to different technologies that would further the common man.
Despite their benevolence, their technology raced ahead, and their shadowy population grew and grew. Eventually they reached for the stars in 1944 whilst the Earth was gripped by the most devastating war it had ever known.
World War 2 was only one of many events during the early 1900's that disillusioned the newly born Vanguard. The Vanguardians, as they came to call themselves, saw themselves as better than the normal Earthers. Still benevolent, yet superior due to the nanomachines that made them far more able, superhuman, than the typical Human; mentally and physically far more powerful and capable.
After gathering millions of people, from virtually every culture so as to preserve the rich tapestry of humanity, as well as millions of animals from all species and all the species of plant, Vanguard took to the stars, hunting for a new system to call home.
They eventually found a large, yet young system with a far larger than normal but very stable young star.
There they used extraordinary technology - even by Vanguard standards - to craft six artificial worlds. One they made an exact replica of Earth, in which they put all the animals and plants they brought with them. The five others were roughly the same size as Earth, but different, each with their own mix of Earth flora and fauna and their own.
Now, however, the System is also home to dozens of huge military stations, Orbital defense systems, system defense arrays, fleet docks, training stations and, on the other rocky planets in the system, military training complexes. The Vanguardians called this system 'Vanguardia', baptising it their new home, although they do keep a constant vigil over Earth.
The rest, you mostly know. You have been alive for 44 years. The families you and Maria belong to were some of the first to settle outside Vanguardia, as the home system was getting filled up with tens of billions of people.
You never paid much attention to history, so this was refreshing.
What do you do now?
