Intrigued, you read about the history of Psionics in Vanguard.

The Brief History of Psionics By Edward E. Woodwood

Psionics first started appearing amongst the Vanguard Humans roughly 23 years ago, at the turn of the millennium and 9 years before contact and hostilities with the council races began, about 56 years after Vanguard reached for the stars for the very first time since its foundation in the mid 1700's by a wealthy British family.

At first, they appeared in only very small numbers and were treated as more a curiosity than anything else. As more started appearing, their powers becoming more powerful and apparent as well, the government started to take notice. Some were studied, others were recruited as specialist soldiers and engineers, the first pioneers in Vanguardian Psionic technology and military strategy.

With more psionics emerging every year, they became an accepted part of Vanguards society, however their small numbers made them highly prized and sought after. Many who didn't join the military or enter the scientific or engineering communities enrolled in the entertainment industry.

Many psionic-only technologies were developed that aided Vanguardian society.

Although not everything went smoothly. Contact between Vanguard and the more primitive races encountered on many worlds soured due to the open use of psionics and technology deemed 'magical, prompting many small skirmishes and even wars, some of which ended in extermination of native sapient races, much to the chagrin of the Vanguard High Command. Some of the more advanced civilisations encountered, who didn't have psionic abilities of their own, grew jealous, again, like their more primitive brethren, severing contact. Many even actively worked against Vanguard, allying with or aiding in some way the hostile Council Races, passing on information, such was the greed and lust for psionic power.

To add to Vanguards foreign relations problem, the advent of the Unknown Menace made things even harder. Without allies to aide in various theatres of war where Vanguard troops were stretched, militia corps were created. Due to the way they were recruited from the colonist populations, they invariably included psionics.

Once this fact became apparent to the strange attacker, the militia units were targeted specifically, the Psionic-capable Vanguardians carried off with the falling back enemy forces. To this day, after almost 23 years of constant war, noone knows where they were taken or what happened to them.

You sit back. Although brief, to your knowledge the history of Psionics is correct.

What do you do now?

It all makes sense now;

Dr. Strangelove is a psychic, bent on corrupting the whole military for those unknown forces!
Well, or is at least part of an organization that wishes to do so. Yes, yes. Now the pieces are falling together.

We were hot on his tail before, and that is why he "changed" us. My suspicions are fail-proof already, but we might want to investigate further, to bring him unto justice. And to reverse the proccess.

(Alternatively, we could get serious and going. But that would make all our hard work on being borderly-insane for naught, so I will not opt for it.)

Look up the Unknown Menace. These people must be kind of incompetent if they really don't know anything about this menace, right? So there's gotta be some information.

Also, try to remember who we were married to, and at what age. And who our first serious lover was.

You use the console again, this time looking up the unknown menace.

As you trawl through the military files, you find that the enemy is truly unknown. The Vanguard military gave them the more apt name 'Alien Coalition' due to the dozens of races ((OOC: If someone could find where i stated the exact number of races in the Unknown Menace, that would be grand. I can remember and i cant find where i said it)) involved in its forces.

The military had tried to track their paths through Warp-space, and whilst the tracking was successful, whenever a military task force was sent to investigate, they found absolutely nothing. And, when they did find something it was usually abandoned. The enemy also always seems to know which parts of Vanguard space is the least defended.

Vanguard is utterly clueless about their enemy. They have never managed to capture one alive, they dont know where they originate from, the enemies tech always seems to disintegrate whenever captured and they leave no trace before or after an attack.

The lack of information, you see, is not for want of trying.; Vanguard is one of, if not the, most advanced faction in the known universe. They have technology that would make the Council Races green (or even more green) with envy. There are even rumours, according to some military reports, of some of the council races reverse engineering some captured Vanguard technology, with varying success.

You cannot gleam any more information about the Alien Coalition. You think that there may be more, but you dont have the clearance to access it.

Also look up the origins of Earth humans and Vanguard humans.

For a bit of light reading, you look up Earth Humans and Vanguard Humans.

Earth Humans are just that: 'Normal' humans who live on earth, still totally oblivious to any other alien race and living in splendid isolation...for now.

Vanguard humans, of which you are one, are part of a group that was once a private company, founded by a rich Yorkshire Family during the beginnings of the Industrial revolution in England, UK.

The Tolthorpe Family, an extraordinarily rich trading family, headed by a man named Richard Alexander Tolthorpe was an outspoken advocate of the sciences. They were intellectuals. They attracted and gathered together the greatest engineers and minds from all nations, regardless of politics. Eventually, this grew into a secretive intellectuals club after a few years.

After a decade, entire towns were built, even dedicated laboratories and engineering works were built, disguised from all who weren't 'in the know'.

By the year 1800, the club had become one of the largest companies in the world. Chartered by the British Royal Family, who were sponsors, they grew, guarding their knowledge and technology, which was expanding at an ever increasing rate. By the mid 1800's, they had already surpassed the technology level of the 21st century by far and by 1900 they were so far ahead they would be untouchable by any other Earth based factions.

However, they were benevolent. They helped people from the shadows. They suppressed undesirable technologies that could enslave or kill millions, and guided intellectuals to different technologies that would further the common man.

Despite their benevolence, their technology raced ahead, and their shadowy population grew and grew. Eventually they reached for the stars in 1944 whilst the Earth was gripped by the most devastating war it had ever known.

World War 2 was only one of many events during the early 1900's that disillusioned the newly born Vanguard. The Vanguardians, as they came to call themselves, saw themselves as better than the normal Earthers. Still benevolent, yet superior due to the nanomachines that made them far more able, superhuman, than the typical Human; mentally and physically far more powerful and capable.

After gathering millions of people, from virtually every culture so as to preserve the rich tapestry of humanity, as well as millions of animals from all species and all the species of plant, Vanguard took to the stars, hunting for a new system to call home.

They eventually found a large, yet young system with a far larger than normal but very stable young star.

There they used extraordinary technology - even by Vanguard standards - to craft six artificial worlds. One they made an exact replica of Earth, in which they put all the animals and plants they brought with them. The five others were roughly the same size as Earth, but different, each with their own mix of Earth flora and fauna and their own.

Now, however, the System is also home to dozens of huge military stations, Orbital defense systems, system defense arrays, fleet docks, training stations and, on the other rocky planets in the system, military training complexes. The Vanguardians called this system 'Vanguardia', baptising it their new home, although they do keep a constant vigil over Earth.

The rest, you mostly know. You have been alive for 44 years. The families you and Maria belong to were some of the first to settle outside Vanguardia, as the home system was getting filled up with tens of billions of people.

You never paid much attention to history, so this was refreshing.

Stepping away from the console, you start pondering your past.

You remember you were married at 41, only 3 years ago. You remember that you were married to a man called Adrian Lucero. You cannot remember what happened to him though.....

After that, check up on the Council Races.

Stepping back to the console yet again, you look up the council races, checking up on what they have been doing recently.

You find documents pertaining to Vanguard suspicions about a Morey Supersoldier project using reverse engineered Vanguard tech. There are many notes from engineers stating that it is impossible, that the Morey have little chance of successfully doing anything even if they did manage to capture intact Vanguard equipment.

Other than that, there is intelligence on the Morey command structure. It seems that the entire thing is fractured, with inner factions fighting to influence their precious matriarch. You also see that they are locked in heavy combat with the Slinkar. You admit to yourself, the Morey seem like a race to be studied. They seem very interesting.

Moving on, you look up the Torun and Abridan alliance. They seems to be inactive according to Vanguard intelligence and intercepted communications. They are giving only minimal assistance to the dozens of minor council races and none to the Morey at all. No one seems to know what is going on with them, but this behaviour is highly unusual, according to espionage experts.

As far as you can see, the only major activity from the Torun and the Abridan is their constant fighting with the Slinkar and rogue factions that refuse to accept Council rule, and they seem to be doing well, although they are not going on any large offensives. There are dozens of notes stating that further investigation is needed.

Finally, you look up the Slinkar. You shudder. You have never liked the Slinkar. To many eyes. And legs. And claws. From the intelligence reports, their expansion has been halted by the various other civilisations. Now they seem to be locked in combat on at least half a dozen fronts. You muse to yourself that if it wasn't for their insanely fast reproduction, they would probably have run out of troops long ago.

Out of interest, you search for Vanguard activity. Unsurprisingly, there is absolutely nothing available to you.

'Not surprising. For a benevolent faction, we Vanguardians really do like our secrets...' You think to yourself, amused.

What do you do now? You notice that the time has really flown. its almost curfew time for non-crew shipboard personnel.

I say we screw curfew and wander around the air ducts to see if we can find anything interesting. We get caught blame amnesia we just had before.

You wander around the ship after shutting off the computer, not looking for anything in particular.

You wander up and down the halls, taking in the many rooms and sections of the ship. Walking for hours, you stay up past the curfew, which makes guards an obstacle to avoid. As you walk through the halls, you dont really see much of interest, although you evade the guards fairly easily. You do note however that it was only by the skin of your teeth and had there been a full compliment instead of a skeleton crew you would probably have been seen.

As you walk down the science sector, which every Vanguard ship has despite the ships main role, you spot Dr Strangelove walking ahead of you. He looks to be heading somewhere fast.

What do you do?

((Random encounter ahoy!))

((PS: Funk, love that gif. Sharpe + frantic nuns + dead chicken = hilarity)).

Follow him. Discreetly. If he spots us, wave hello and engage him in idle smalltalk before leaving for our sleeping quarters or whatever.

Come to think of it, why is curfew instituted on this ship? What sense does that even make?

You follow him discreetly. He heads towards one of the analysis labs.

You manage to sneak in after him before the door closes. Hiding behind a large non-biological analysis machine in the lab, you have a mostly clear view of the room. Dr Strangelove is working on something small, using several different machines in the room. Strangeloves rail-pistol lies on one of the worktables in the centre of the room. He seems fully engrossed in what he is doing.

As you watch, you ponder the curfew. The only thin you can think is that it allows the vastly reduced crew to keep an eye on all the non-military passengers. How effective the surveillance is, you wouldn't know, if that is even the reason for the curfew.

As you watch, the door opens and a beautiful young woman, about your age walks in. She is wearing a full body jumpsuit, and a really evil grin that gives you the shivers just looking at her. She looks familiar, but you cant place her.

From your hiding place, you see Dr Strangelove turn around. When he sees her, he jumps for his pistol, but the woman is faster. She whips out a silenced conventional pistol and shoots Strangeloves pistol off the table. It lands near to you, but luckily, neither Strangelove or the mysterious woman see you.

"Scheiße!" You hear Strangelove curse. "Vat are you doing here? I thought all of you were killed during the raid on Luna-3."

The woman smiles, a move that would be beautiful if it wasn't so terrifying. Something is really nagging at the back of your head. You know this woman, she looks hellishly familiar, but you just can't place her.

"Oh, dear Dr" The woman purrs in a voice smoother than honey, and as seductive, sultry and enticing as the most skilled seductress, stepping closer, the body suit hugging every inch of her ample curves. "One does not simply kill one of us...." She giggles "...As you should well know, Dr Strangelove. You created me, you created my brothers and sisters." She giggled again. Then her face changed to one of pure fury.

"THEN YOU ABANDONED US!! US! YOUR CHILDREN!! YOUR CREATIONS!!" She bellowed, the machines and equipment in the room vibrating. With a speed that would put even a Vanguard trooper to shame, she sprinted towards Dr Strangelove, vaulting clean over the examination table between them. Now only a few feet away from the Doctor, she grins her malicious grin. "And now, as revenge for my fallen siblings and those that survived, i will kill you!".

<'Bit of a cliche'd speech. Must have watched one too many movies....'> you think to yourself.

You glance at Dr Strangelove. He is keeping his composure, however you can see he is afraid. That doesn't stop him asking questions though.

"There are more of you alive?" He asks.

"Of course." She answers, aiming for Dr Strangelove's knees and pulling the trigger twice, putting bullets into the doctors knees, one in each. The doctor falls to the ground, but he doesn't make a sound.

<'Must be pain inhibitors'> You think to yourself.

"How did you survive, if i may ask?" the Doctor says.

The woman just grins in response, aiming for the doctors crotch.....

The Doctor seems to be in a dire situation. He is unarmed, his gun lying near to your hiding place.

What do you do?

Wait-a-minute. She looks familiar? This.. could be the awnser.

Consider for a moment if we might be of the same "batch".
It would explain so much! Actually, not "that much", but it certainly would explain this feeling of alien-es that we have felt recently.

If we are convinced that this might be the case, reveal yourself and try diplomacy.

As in, getting more information out of her - we are somewhat sure that "something" is amiss here. She might hold the key to the "what".

If we are fairly convinced that this can not be the case, go get her.
As subtly as possible, take the gun. Take aim, and just shoot - she means too much buisness as that we should try diplomacy in this case.
