Caverns are oddly shaped sometimes. I just used the reveal command from dfhack to get an idea where my caverns could be because I digged like crazy and couldn't find anything.
Often the caverns can be found near the middle of the map, but they also can hide more in the corners. The ususal tactics are straight down stairways and some exploring corridors every few levels.
The caverns can be small and stretch any number of z-levels but only a tiny fraction of an actual level, they can also be broader shaped and cover a vast part of the map.

I thought it was a special folder (from when I looked it up).  Thanks for helping me although all this computer lingo confuses me incessantly.  I can download it now that I know it doesn't need to go in a specific part of the PC.

And thanks for the info on caverns.  It's a little disappointing that not all caverns are cavernous (I wanted an underground Grand Canyon) but it should be easier to find now that I have an idea of what to look for.

EDIT: I got around to downloading the LNP and I put it in a folder (directory).  But now it seems to be unable to find my Dwarf Fortress directory and that makes it spaz out and not do anything except make my computer ask me if the program works correctly.  Does LNP need to be in the same folder (directory?) as DF?

My best hint is to set the following parameters in the advanced world generation:

[CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MIN] and [CAVERN_LAYER_OPENNESS_MAX] to something like 80-85
[CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MIN] and [CAVERN_LAYER_PASSAGE_DENSITY_MAX] to something like 5-15.

This will make your caverns real caverns and not the maze crap you usually get.
