Outer Wilds - A Space Exploration Game
« on: July 09, 2013, 07:39:52 am »

Surprised there isn't a thread for this - Bay12 usually knows about games way before I do.

"Outer Wilds is a space exploration game that invites you to embark on a cosmic expedition into a turbulent world driven by forces beyond your control. Let curiosity be your guide as you fly into the heart of a gas giant, meet fellow travelers on quantum moons, and roast marshmallows beneath alien skies.

The game is a seamless first-person experience that gives you just 20 minutes to freely explore a miniature solar system as it dynamically evolves over time. After those 20 minutes are up, the Sun goes supernova and the entire Universe ends. Fortunately, the Solar System is stuck in a time loop, and only by exploring over the course of multiple playthroughs will you come to understand the forces and secrets that drive the Universe."

Made by USC students, the shtick of the game is that, every time you die (which is when the sun explodes, if you're lucky) you go right back to the beginning of the game again. There's no objective or collectibles or anything beyond "Explore the solar system, find secrets." Each planet is unique and dangerous in it's own way, and after 23 loops (very few of which ended with the sun exploding - Most just involved running out of air because my ship ended up on the far side of the system somehow) I'm still looking for stuff. It's also free.

Don't have time for a full-blown look at this right now, but through a quick fiddle it looked really interesting. Apart from the annoying "esc quits to menu and you're probably gonna accidentally start another game rather than your old one".
But the gameplay itself is good. :P

I can't find out how to resume an expedition, I pressed all the buttons but nothing happens.

EDIT: But horrible controls aside I was really scared when I went to investigate the Dark Bramble, scary stuff!

DOUBLE EDIT: I mean it! This game is fucking creepy! I had to stop playing after an hour, my nerves can't handle it!

Yeah, when I said "each planet is dangerous in it's own way," that had the unspoken sub-text of "especially Dark Bramble." I'd expect no less from a giant ball of mist and thorns, though.

Save-game-wise, the game only saves at the end of a loop (so, when you die), and the only thing that changes from each loop is the planet information in your computer, and you start with the launch codes every time after the first one.

Very interesting, it's been a long time since I tried such a nice exploration themed game. The physics are fun too, I have been in quite a few dangerous situations due to gravity shenanigans.

Bramble, as mentioned, was quite the holy shit moment.

If you're talking about the download link, I had some trouble with that too. The only way it would work for me is if I opened it in a new tab.

What a great game concept.

Doesn't look like my computer could handle it, so I'll have to settle with merely watching the thread for now :p

So, did anybody figure out how to resume?
It's annoying to have to the launch codes each time I start the game...

I thought you just used either s or the down arrow to select it, then E as enter. Works for me, as long as you played long enough to "die" and respawn.

Holy shit this game is amazing. The physics are great, and there's so damn much to find, with a whole solar system (and a bit more) to see. Anyone else find the "quantum moon"?
