Do you find it worth the FPS hit?

I lucked out on my 'play a bit every now and then' fort: Got a dwarf who likes spears and candy. Which soon enough yielded an artifact...candycane? Something like that, anyway. I figured I might as well run with the theme and made enough (non-artifact) spears for a whole squad of them.

Simply put, anything with vital organs to pierce dies instantly when going up against my speardwarves. No armor will even slow a candy spear down, and with enough skill the dorfs seem to unerringly go for the most vital spots.

I've also mined enough to start outfitting an axe squad, and the results so far have involved goblin bits ending up two or three screens apart from each other.

So yes, candy is very worth it for weapons.

I stick to the outer 'cracks', the ones that are completely safe to mine. If there's a level with only a 4x4 area blacked out, that fixes the location of the potential hollow for that level and gives me a few more safe tiles if the unrevealed tiles on the level above or below don't overlap that one 4x4 too much.

I also tend to run small militaries backed up with choke points and marksdwarves, so I don't go looking for more than about a dozen weapons' worth of adamantine.

I got around 100 "FUN RUNNERS" causing havic for native underground wildlife and a 100 member goblin siege. Part of me wants to kill two birds with one stone...
I did lose about 10 FPS to these two events, but violence solves all such problems.

I suppose I need to get over my paranoia :).  A few candy weapons would be nice.

Candy weapons/armor are good EXCEPT crossbows, hammer, shields, maces, and whips. Candy is strong, but it has an extremely low density, so it's useless for blunt weapons.

Aye, this is why I personally prefer steel for my military as it gives a wider range of weaponry.

Regardless, it's pretty fuck-awesome to see a speardorf laser-stabbing FBs in the noggin with a masterwork spear made of candy.

Technically while candy shields are worthless for bashing, they're just as good defensively as any other shield, and light as air besides = doesn't slow your already heavily-armored soldiers down.

By the way, is there any reason there's no metal-armored marksdwarf preset uniform in DF? I usually try to outfit my marksdwarves in adamantium armor once I can afford it, but I just realized that AFAIK encumbrance/weight wouldn't actually impede marksdwarves any more than soldiers. So maybe I should flip that around, with soldiers wearing adamantium to get to battle quicker, while the stationary marksdwarves wear steel.

I think that movement speed and attack speed are currently tied together, with that being fixed sometime soon. In that case, I'd say lighter armor for marksdwarves is good because melee dwarves should gain armor-user skill and cause them to move faster. But I could be wrong.

Either way, I would save the good stuff for weapons, keep the marksdwarves in leather, and keep your melee dwarves in steel. Unless you have some extra, in which case give it to your best soldiers. Of course that depends on how you use marksdwarves, while I keep them behind carefully thought out fortifications, some don't. I don't think either armor would be particularly useful against elite goblin bowmen, as bolts/arrows tend to have enough mass to cause considerable damage through armor anyway.

I usually keep them behind fortifications, but sometimes they get ambushed while they're out picking up ammunition. It's not for best case/intended case defense, it's for "Oh shit stop trying to be a hero!" moments.

Adamantine weapons are somewhat spoiled by being a very nice upgrade for your best military dwarves, and a massive one for the recruits with no skill and base stats. That lucky masterwork adamantine axe? Give it to Urist McCheesmaker, she'll be able to make better use of it than Urist McLegendary.

That doesn't stop me from giving adamantine and useful artifacts to the upper squads though.

You know... in terms of physics... a light mace that you could swing faster would hit a lot harder than a heavier mace that you can't swing very well.

But a mace that's too light still wouldn't hurt very much because you can only swing your arm so fast. In real-life, clearly there's an optimal weight somewhere, and it's probably a lot heavier than an adamantine mace, which probably only weighs a few ounces.

Being able to swing a twig with a tennis ball on it may be faster than a sledgehammer, but it doesn't mean it's stronger.

Oh good lord...

Kinetic Energy which is the force you strike something with is equal to half the mass times the SQUARE of the velocity....

Which means that while the mass to force ratio is linear, speed to force is exponential, making speed to FAR more important.

A tennis ball is a horrendous example because it can absorb quite a bit of the kinetic energy due to its elasticity... but a candy cane mace is not made of bubble gum, it's a jaw breaker.  and a 25oz jaw breaker at 10mph will F@$#@ your stink up far worse than a 50oz steel hammer at 5mph.
