Found Candy [NEED HELP!]
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:31:31 am »

Okay so I was playing the game when I got an announcement that my miners had found the third cavern, a magma pool, the great magma sea and admantium. I rejoiced because I had found magma and admantium but then I realised that I only had a population of ten and my military consisted of five weaponless, armour-less and completely useless migrants. I also have no traps. What should I do?

I'm scared.

The usual thing to do if you are not playing for fun in Dwarf Fortress is: Wall yourself in.

Even the most dangerous, creepiest and biggest beasts are unable to bring down your soap (or any other useless building material) walls.

Suddenly.

So you didn't actually mined the adamantine yet? If you haven't touched the candy pillairs, you don't have any problems. Continue your life, make magma furnaces, build a giant army, maybe some great corridors with steel upright spikes linked to lever... Then you can mine adamantine. But don't touch it until you are ready.

It's very easy to mine candy safely once you understand how they work. The spires themselves will always have a 2x2 hole where the clowns come pouring out, if you don't touch the hole, you're safe. The hole will always be encased in a wall of candy, corners and all, so therefore allowing you to mine the bits sticking out around it, a picture of what I'm talking about will be shown below.

Everything outside the red outline is mineable, whereas everything inside the outline might be holding a possible clown car.

Additionally, if you smooth and carve fortifications on the adamantine before you mine it, you can trigger the invasion while in fact being perfectly safe from it.

Might kill your fps though.

Usually, it's safe to mine them out from where they hit the magma sea up. I haven't seen any entrances where they were above SMR or in the magma sea (bordering the sea from the top is fine).

Just dig in man, I've had a number of candy accidents when digging shafts for gold near the magma sea. You should be safe for ~20 z levels if the spire is at the third cavern. (though I had a spire once that had a hole at up at the third cavern :P.) If you cause fun, just burrow your dwarves in the fortress proper, cancel all labors, make everyone masons and seal off the staircase.

Isolating the spire if you like, but you really should consider the benefits of population control.

I've seen hollow centers in the 3rd cavern before

I often start the game digging straight down to the magma sea, scouting the caverns along the way, looking at what ores I have and getting to magma before the first migrant wave. The candy spire itself can't hurt you.

Stuff that spawns in the caverns, especially the second and third cavern, however, can hurt you.

More recently I've been playing mostly at the surface, because I find surface creatures more fun than cave creatures, and if you reveal the caves, cave creatures spawn, taking the place of surface creature spawns.

Actually, even if you've never revealed the caverns before, creatures still spawn down there. You just can't see it. Can be confirmed with DFhack's reveal/unreveal function and a bit of luck. FBs, however, definitely won't spawn. I think.

Also, has anybody suggested smoothing the candy tiles and carving a fortification into them? If it reveals the, um, SPOILERS, they'll be trapped down there, and as long as you don't get unlucky and a firebreather spawns, manages to find his way all the way up the shaft, and then just sits there spamming his firebreath attack (Which I also don't think can actually happen, but I've heard stories about it), you should be fine. It'll also reveal the whole shaft, so you'll know what you can and can't safely dig.

It WILL, however, also rape your FPS.

Don't ignore the FPS warnings!  Candy isn't really worth it, at least for me.  I've found steel to be just fine.

FPS destroys more forts then both invaders and tantrum spirals.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

For armour, yes. But adamantine is brutal for edged weapons, and you don't need as much of it as you would for armour.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
