are undead elephants not aggressive? I had some elven merchants walk within 3 squares of a trio of undead elephants resting in their hot tub (swamp) and the elephants didn't attack.

Elves dont seem to trigger wildlife attacks from what ive seen. If they were zombie Elephants, then it makes sense-zombies are not very motivated, and move very slow.

undead everything is very aggressive, and will chase your dwarves across the map and into your fort. even undead groundhogs will (though a no skill peasant can kill them easy, heh).

Elves don't get attacked by wildlife though (unfortunately). Goblins don't either, also unfortunately. I wish the elephants would trample the stupid elves.

goblins dont like elves much either, last 3 lots of pointy eared bastards lost that way (possibly being loaded to bursting with their mates goblin pants didnt help with things, the 2 before that failed the traditional dwarvish "bath welcome").  

I had the same problem in my last fortress, mostly with stray woodcutters.
they do ok vs smaller zombie stuff (watch those legs fly) but the only thing that seems to work on the elephants is the special magma reset button.
 If you are scared of magma building walls out of piles of statues and a few doors works well it just takes a while (until the trolls turn up and knock em all over one at a time)
