Teki Silova: Loremaster

You are Teki Silova, travelling scholar of folklore from the Great Cold Wilderness. Coming from the frigid north, you have come to the Acasi Empire to record stories and folklore. Your first stop is the small mountain town of Beriac.

I would suggest that we are Teki Silova, Travelling Scholar of Folklore from the Great Cold Wilderness, come to the Acasi Empire to study the folklore of tribes past. Although one would expect us to be a bookish type, we are in fact rather practical, being both learned and proficient in hunting, tambourine playing, and three forms of duelling. However, we are not easily given to opening ourselves to others, unless the goal is knowledge.

We have grey hair and intellectual eyebrows; our pale eyes are piercing and particularly lively. A slight build and an average height, our eyes are in fact probably our most distinguishing feature: when angered they grow cold, flat, lizardlike. We are proud. We commonly wear furs when practical and carry a leather sack and a tambourine in a tambourine case that was hand made and gifted to us by an old friend.

    You are Teki Silova, Travelling Scholar of Folklore, native to the Great Cold Wilderness. Your homeland is nothing more than a vast stretch of wilderness in the freezing north, interspersed by small villages eking out a meager living in the unforgiving forests. After your family set out to migrate south to better prospects, you became enamored with the cultures and stories you saw and heard during that exodus, and, as you grew older, you dedicated your life to searching out those stories and putting them to writing.

    As a matter of practicality, you learned from a young age how to survive outside of civilization; hunting, cleaning kills, defending yourself, and other survival skills come as naturally to you as speaking. More than once in your travels have those skills kept you alive.

    Your education, nonexistent during your youth, blossomed as you approached manhood. Though not formally schooled, kindly acquaintances helped you learn how to read and write in Kalodic, the language of the peoples south of the Wilderness. From there, you taught yourself everything you could about what interested you: new languages, math and science, history; anything you could get your hands on, really. Sadly, your opportunities to learn the arts were more limited than you could have hoped. An old friend of your family introduced you to traditional songs and dances from back in the Wilderness and gifted you a handcrafted tambourine, which you are highly competent with (at least in the field of traditional songs and dances). Perhaps one day you'll have the chance to indulge yourself in learning more about music.



    Now you have come to the Acasic Empire. Following a caravan further south, you left Kalodai in search of new stories to record. Having just crossed the border earlier that day, the caravan rumbles to a halt in a small town called Beriac in the foothills of the Daros mountains. You plan on leaving the caravan the following day in favor of staying for a time in Beriac to search around for stories and investigate the history of the town, but you could possibly stick with the caravan and head further south towards the coast. As a literate person, you can typically find work as a scribe transcribing letters and wills in towns like this where the the vast majority of the citizens are uneducated.

What do you do? (If you choose to stay at Beriac, also post the action you choose to take the next day.)

Stay in Beriac, work as a scribe for a few days so that you have money to sustain yourself for a bit while we pursue our intellectual interests.

Hang around the local tavern/inn in the evenings, play some traditional wilderness music to entertain the locals, and keep an eye out for any interesting locals who might be worth learning from.

That's a good idea. Also talk to the other (possibly travelling) musicians you come across for any interesting news.

Stay in Beriac, work as a scribe for a few days so that you have money to sustain yourself for a bit while we pursue our intellectual interests.

Hang around the local tavern/inn in the evenings, play some traditional wilderness music to entertain the locals, and keep an eye out for any interesting locals who might be worth learning from.

    You quickly find the inn and rent out their open room. It's what you expected from an inn in such a remote location: not much. Even so, the room is reasonably clean and the food is good. Beyond that, you don't particularly care about the quality of your surroundings.

    You wait in the common room of the inn for the nightly crowd to gather, but a surprisingly few number of people arrive. Your foreign garb attracts a few glances, but nobody makes a move to speak with you. Their hushed demeanor is slightly unsettling.

    "Pardon me, but is their something wrong with them?" You hesitantly, in your accented Acasic, ask the serving girl while gesturing to the man who appears to be the focus of the group. She pauses and brushes a few stray hairs away from her eyes before answering.

    "Oh. That's Calib. He's just... He's going through hard times. We all are, but he's gotten it worse than the rest of us. Don't worry about it." She smiles reassuringly before glancing around and speaking in a hushed tone. "You know, they-"

    "Alaya!" The innkeeper interrupts her before she can finish her sentence, striding over to the table where you sit. He pulls Alaya away and whispers sternly to her for a moment before turning back towards you. "Pay no attention to any gossip Alaya told you. Things are hard here, but... Well, we'll get through it. Always have." He stands still momentarily, appearing to be thinking through what to say next. Taking a third option, he nods sharply and turns back to his business.

    The innkeeper's intervention drew the gazes of Calib and his group. He raises a hand and nods slightly at you, quietly acknowledging your presence. The hushed discussion slowly picks up again amongst his companions.



    The next day, word had gotten around that a scribe was in town. A trickle of people would occasionally stop by the inn to have words committed to paper; the faces of the townsfolk were, for the most part, somber and subdued. Long after the rest had come and gone, you met the one exception to that standard.

    "So yerra scriber, righ'? Well, lemme tell ya, I tell ya I gotta story yerra wanna righ' down posshat." It was nearly sunset. The majority of Beriac's citizens had retired to the safety of their homes, but the dirt-coated vagabond interrupting your dinner had other ideas.

    "...Do you mean 'posthaste'?"

    "Whaterrer you wanna call it, fancypants." The man was filthy, missing a tooth, and one of his eyes was pointing in the wrong direction. This should be interesting. "But I gotta story yerr gonn' wanna hear. A real history if'n ya catch what I'm sayin'."

    "I presume you're implying that your story is true, but your visage is detracting from it's plausability." He seemed inordinately proud that he had a visage, and that it detracted from another large word. You suspect he doesn't understand what you're saying.

    "Righ', righ'. Well lemme tell ya. They don' think it's real, but I tells ya, I bin a sailor when I was a lad, 'n I knows when I sees, ya see, I sees them out 'er, an' the others, they-"

    "Is there a period in the foreseeable future?" You not-so-subtly try to prod the man into finishing his run-on sentence.

    "Well, gi' out yer parchn't an' I'll tell ya what I know."

    There's no harm in humoring the man, you suppose. Retrieving your writing supplies, you wait for him to say what he saw that only he recognizes. He leans forward, very obviously glancing furtively about. He elaborates in a conspiratorial tone.

    "They dunno 'em cause they's not sailor's, but I seen 'em." He inches forward more. "The squids 'r out there, ya see? I sees them wherever I goes, and they cannae tell me I'm crazy, no sirree, they just dunno. "

    You are less than impressed at the revelation that squids are out there, but the man expounds at great length about the places he's seen squids; up trees, under rocks, in rocks, in a sandwich he had once. He pauses momentarily to urge you to write down what he says. You halfheartedly summarize his soliloquy. When you put the last period down (all the periods were your additions), he beams at you.

    "Ya keep that an' tell 'em all what I sez, ya hear? An' here, have this lil' summat to keep." He passes you a small metal rectangle, pitted with rust, with a frayed leather cord running through a hole in the metal. It seem to be some sort of necklace or pendant. In its center is are three mismatched lines of a light metal, untouched by abrasions or oxidation. "Ya keep that, I dun' need it 'cause I knows what the squids are doin'. It'll keep 'er safe."

    With that he stands up and obtrusively sneaks out the door, turning around to tap the side of his nose in a gesture he most likely had never actually seen before. As the door clicks shut, you're left alone in the inn.

Anyway, we should split tomorrow between working the Inn and exploring the town. We shouldn't dig too deep as to what is plaguing the town yet, as we are strangers, but we should do some preliminary investigations on some smaller matters. Ask about or research the following things over the course of the next day:

-How often caravans pass through town?
-Are the local roads safe to travel alone or in a small group? or is a large party recommended?
-What sort of fish and game can be found in the area?
-Who owns most of the land in and around town?
-What can we easily find out about the serving girl without seeming nosey?
-What can we easily find out about the crazy guy without seeming nosey?

Things we should definitely do though include let our beard stubble express itself a bit more, and see if there is a local shaman or folk singer to have a chat with, maybe exchange cultures a little bit. Buy him or her a drink if we have the spare cash now. We could offer to tell them that story our uncle used to tell us, about the two old men in a hammock and the snow leopard.

    You resolve to investigate a few matters about the town. While you want to avoid the appearance of poking into matters that are none of your business, it can't hurt to find out a few more mundane things. As a new day dawns, you find yourself making polite small talk with strangers while asking trivial questions. How's the hunting around these parts? Is there a lord in charge of this village? Is it safe to travel alone around here? A pattern reveals itself. At the beginning of the conversation, the villagers are polite, but guarded around the mysterious young northerner with his white hair and savage accent. After a few minutes of you talking and helping with whatever task they're busy with, they relax and transition to being at ease around the polite and helpful young man, whose manners were obviously learned after he left the barbarians up in the freezing north.

    At the end, though, they fall back into reticence when you inquire about the safety of the roads. A few answer evasively, others just act as though the conversation is over, still others tell you to just be careful alone after dark.

    You do learn a few pieces of information, though. Apparently, 'his lordship ol' Rugal kel Selos' loosely controls the surrounding lands. Well into his sixties, he turns a blind eye on poaching and has an amiable relationship with the citizens of his domain. The general opinion of him is strongly favorable. As for hunting, there are lots of mountain goats and deer in the foothills, which help compensate for the smaller amounts of arable land.

    Eventually, you decide to seek information along another route. The serving girl, Alaya, seems willing to talk. Around noon, you head back to the inn and loiter until the opportune moment arises.

   

    There she is. She's... pretty. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. You get ready to abandon ship wait she's heading this way. Uh-oh, maybe she'll no she's not turning down the hallway she's getting closer, augh this was a terrible idea, you can't turn away now, that'd be awkward, wait, what did you have for breakfast, does your breath smell, you knew you shouldn't have gotten all sweaty helping the loggers move wood, she's talking, how long has she been talking?

    It occurs to you that you've been standing expressionless and still for the past half a minute, a portion of which Alaya has been talking at you. With a shake of your head, you come to your senses and apologize for zoning out. She seems to find your lack of reaction somewhat amusing.

    "I was just asking your name. It's Teki, right?"

    "Um. Yes, it is. How did you know?"

    "My pa told me. He's the innkeeper." She seems interested in talking to you. "So you're a scribe? Do you always travel around like this?"

    "Mostly, yes. I record history, stories, folklore. That doesn't exactly bring in an income, so scribing keeps me going." Small talk. The safe zone of conversations. You've got this.

    "What do you do with everything you write down, then? I mean, after you learn stories from places, what then?"

    "Then I deliver my work to the Scolaris, with any luck. That's still a long way off, but it's my final goal." She seems excited by the mention of the mysterious Scolaris monks. You talk for a while about your travels, pausing to answer her questions. Eventually, you get the chance to turn the conversation back towards your own questions.

    "You're from way up north, aren't you? What's it like there?"

    "Cold. Sparsely populated. Not very pleasant. It seems a lot nicer around here." You reply, passively fishing for information. Alaya seems to disagree with your statement.

    "It's... Well, it's nice enough. It alternates between not very interesting and not very pleasant. Maybe not so much as up north, though."

    "Is the 'not very pleasant' aspect related to what happened with Calib?" You're treading thin ice. Alaya glances around worriedly, but doesn't attempt to leave the conversation.

    "Don't tell everyone I'm telling you about this, but yes." She notices your expression change when she looked around the room. "It's all right, I'm not leaving. I was just checking if anyone else was here."

    Her face turns serious. "We've had some trouble in Beriac, recently. People don't like to talk about it, but everybody knows something is happening. Things have been... weird, to say the least. Injured animals, strange noises, people missing." She glances down at the table the two of you migrated to throughout the conversation. "Calib lost his daughter. She's... She was eight. Nobody knows how it happened, there's no clues what's happening..."

    "That would explain why everyone tells me to stay inside after dark. How long has this been happening?" Alaya nods.

    "It's safest. And it's been... Let's see, nearly three months now." The conversation pauses momentarily as you digest this new information.

Alright. Lets get back to our roots to unwind, get closer to the locals, and extablish a reputation as a capable if not badass outdoorsman.

Let some of the townsfolk know you are looking to spend a day hunting, and would rather not do so alone. Ask Alaya if she would be willing to spread the word as well.

Continue to be helpful around town and do scribe work where needed, and try to look into the identity of crazy squid man.
