Alex looks at some of the papers and books near him, finding one that looks interesting and reading it.

Derry grinned. Did he ever get around to getting pancakes at her house? He didn't think so... Guess that was another reason to find a way back.

Alex looks at some of the papers and books near him, finding one that looks interesting and reading it.

You pick up a small blank pamphlet and open it up. The letters are freshly inked and strikingly similar to the ones you know, and even scrawled in the same fashion, but the words seem to be jumbled, as if some child had hastily and arbitrarily rearranged them. You set it down and reach for a dark, leather-bound volume. You flip through the pages and see that it has been marked in some long, swirling text that might have been elegant were it not for the ugly marks etched over and under the characters in some of the longer words. You shut the book and lay it aside, reaching for another.

Most of the books you open are written in the familiar but jumbled style, and about one of every 30 you look inside is smeared in the elegant but somehow ugly text. The books you find in the latter language seem to be the thickest, and generally have taller pages and a smaller print, as well as the occassional illustration. Most of the pictures you find appear to be scientific, with sketches of animals and people in various poses and states and tiny mathematical notations arrayed about them.

Alex continues to search for something legible. If that fails, he looks for one of the books with the sketches of animals and mathematical notations and tries to decipher them.
