You did poke it though. You were touching the symbols on the door, which is why you stepped aside when Kyle went up to try his disc on it. You touched the symbols, I just never said so outright, but it was heavily implied. It didn't do anything besides.

Look, dumbasses. If it behaves the same for Jack as it does for Kyle, then it will probably think they're both the same. If one is a 'Bearer', then the other probably is too.

Alex is the only one who can read any of this, and the best one to be able to get anything useful from this, and Wells can protect you guys better than I can.

"Well it could be lots of things and nothing. I vote for myself to do it. Honestly, I'm not a bearer but I am responsible for bringing you guys here. It should be me.

But who knows! I mean, for all we know everyone else in who doesn't put the rock in will get fried, or turned into chickens. There's no answers until we find out, so let's go ahead-and let me do it."

She wasn't using her 'leadership' voice-this was plain old Beth, talking to her friends.

((Well here's who we've got so far,

Kyle, the obvious Bearer, who can't do it
Alex, the literate, who needs to be able to observe it
Myself, the Wizard, I've stated my thoughts on that already

which leaves the following,

Derry, the Fighter
Wells, the Tank

All of you guys are the ones best capable of physical combat and not dying, we really have a fighter-heavy party, so you guys can use your own decisions as far as that goes.

I'm sticking with myself, but I'm not going to intervene if it's someone else.))
