Uncock the crossbow and cycle through the settings.

No changes. The blade still emerges, and the other settings still do nothing.

Spin the spear around in my hands and thrust it at the tree.

You try spinning the spear, but you end up just looking like a dolt when you whack yourself in the head with the haft. You lean the spear against the aforementioned tree and rub the welt beginning to rise on the side of your noggin.

Examine my weapon and belt for any surprises since that seems to be a thing.

You see an odd rune on the butt of your dirk. When you touch it, it grows warm before vanishing. The fingers on the hand you touched it with trail wisps of smoke, though you weren't burnt, and you're beginning to become a bit worried when, Blooper, who is still on your shoulder, coos, and you reach up instinctively to pet him. When you touch him however he bursts into flame. You yelp in surprise and pat him out before the flames can spread. Blooper, being a mostly inflammable ball of viscous liquid, didn't seem to mind being set on fire, and continues to rest contentedly. New Spell learned: Illusion

Cycle through the settings again, this time cocking and uncocking the crossbow at each setting.

Kyle does his best not to smirk as he picks Blooper up and puts him back on his shoulder.

Alex fails to notice the bear as he tries his next experiment.

Cycle through the settings again, this time cocking and uncocking the crossbow at each setting.

Again, nothing happens.

WHAT THE HELL!

KILL THE GIANT BEAR WITH THE SPEAR.

You seize your spear and attack the massive hell bear. Your weapon passes straight through it when you lunge at it. What manner of sorcery is this?!

Kyle snaps his fingers and makes the bear disappear.
"I was playing with my powers."

Load the crossbow in preparation for my next experiment.

"What's--AH! A bear!"
