Derry dives out of the way of the crazy girl.

Bethany proceeds to land on the ground in a dirty skid, blooding her knees and cursing enough for a girl twice her age.

She then rises, and stomps over to the lazy boy, hands perched on her hips.

"Hey! I was trying to fly here! Don't you ever look up?"

Derry climbed to his feet and held himself straight. Who the hell was this crazy girl?

"A better question is why wouldn't I. Just because nobody has done it before, doesn't meant anyone can't-and I'm alot more than a nobody. What were you doing walking here, anyway?" She asks, quirking an eyebrow.

Derry's eyes stared at the floor.

Blood seems to be seeping out from under his shirt.

"Oh scud! Did I hurt you that bad?" She says, her looks softening somewhat.

"Maybe we should get you to see Father Strider in the parish. He's patched me up plenty of times..."

"What's the matter with you? Everyone's allowed in the parish if they need help, even if you don't...you know..." Bethany makes a mock praying symbol with her hands.

"You're bleeding pretty badly, I mean-that could get infected. I'm sorry for knocking you down, but lemme help you, okay?" She asks. What a weird boy...

Derry shakes his head vigorously.
No, my parents say I'm not allowed to get anyone to help me, I need to learn my lesson and not be a whining little bastard for once in my sorry excuse for a life!
By the end Derry is sitting on the ground, his head in his hands.

Bethany blinked, unsure of how to respond at first. She had never known...parents...adults...could be that mean...you were supposed to be able to trust them.

She sits down beside him, guessing it wasn't the accident that hurt him. And suddenly she is very angry, at whoever could hurt him so much.

"...I don't care who said that, it's wrong! It's very wrong...so, listen...let me go get Father Strider, and he'll fix you-and, we'll not say a word to them-either of us. Father keeps confidence in oath-if you ask him not to tell, he won't. I mean...even if they are your parents...they shouldn't be able to treat you like this. I don't even know you, and I know...you don't deserve to be called names like that. Not by anyone.

...Anyway, my name is Bethany Jones. Everyone usually calls me Beth, but I like Jo better...My Dad says it's not exactly a name for a girl, though...so, just call me Beth." She says, wondering if she said too much.

She doesn't even know him, after all. How would he take it?

He raises his head slightly.
I... I'm Derry. A-are you sure he won't tell?

She nods.

"I swear not to tell-on the blue sky and the clear rain-or, the reaperman cuts my soul in twain." She says, in singsong.
