Bethany began to limber up, knowing her drop off method was a lot safer than for her friends than hurtling off into the sky.
She stretched her legs, then her arms, then her...wings! They extended to full length, and flapped hard enough to kick up a small dust cloud.
"All right, when we get close to the ground I'm going to pick you guys up one by one-take you over to the lake-and drop you in. The shallow end, anyway. Help the others get to shore when I've dropped you off. Find a rope, or a vine or something-and something that floats, like a log. We might have to rescue me or somebody that gets dropped in the deeper part of the lake.
If you've got anything really heavy with you, I'd suggest you leave it behind here. Otherwise we might crash. I don't wanna crash, okay?"She turned to Derry then, her wings fluttering slightly.
"Hey, this might be tough, but I need to save you for last. You're the biggest guy among us, and I can't risk everyone on the chance we might not make the flight together, even when I'm still fresh. Do you understand?" She asked, her thoughts skewing back and forth. Yes, she could save Derry *first*, but what if they took a header into the lake? Then...
In truth, Bethany wasn't sure she was going to get even half of them down safely.
