Well, let's say you're going away from Earth on huge spaceship and suddenly shit goes wrong and you have Super Mutants. Social Experiments prepared them for this.

Beth looks around. She quickly does the math in her head. Ties all around.

"Alright, then. I change my vote for Wells to do it." She says with an air of finality.

((I do believe Derry votes for himself, so...

The group nods in agreement, and Kyle hands the disc to Wells, who takes it reluctantly. He approaches the pedestal meekly and the others back away to the edge of the dais. Wells places the disc on the slot. The moment it clicks into place he vanishes.

In the very next moment the room explodes with light.

The disc shines with a brightness that challenges the sun, and its all the five of you can do not to be blinded by the sheer brilliance filling the room. A sudden wave of energy sends you all sprawling as you struggle to shield your eyes, and a burning sensation begins to come over you. A searing pain pierces your chest, like you've just swallowed a drop of molten metal, and a droning sound can be heard which gradually increases in pitch. You all begin to scream as the heat grows steadily more and more intense, and the droning noise continues to grow louder and louder. Derry is the only one of you who manages to overcome the pain enough to get his feet, and as he looks straight into the heart of the glow, he can see a blurred shape, a familiar one. Bethany howls through

And then.. darkness..

Chapter 0.5

You all awaken in a dark room. The floor is cold and made of stone, and you sense the walls to be close, the roof low. A scraping noise is heard as something slides aside, and you all gasp in pain as the daylight streams through the entrance that was revealed.

A galaxy of pain crashes about her. She's never felt pain this bad. Never been prepared for it.

But, she doesn't want to give up. Never, never give up. Bethany tries to force herself to her feet, all her will into an endless scream, the pain getting worse as she tries to fight it. She holds out a hand, thinking oddly it doesn't look much like her own. There's a dark spot in her vision she knows is Derry, and she reaches toward him.

Then the light bursts all around him, lighting filling the empty spots, and she falls into a deeper darkness.

...

Bethany is down and away, when she hears a voice echoing from somewhere high above. Maybe in the stratosphere.

Reality comes back-in waves, colors, shapes and depth perception. And she realizes her vision is cloudy through a haze of tears. She looks up and sees Derry hovering over her, a hand on her shoulder (or maybe she imagines his hand), and perhaps it's concern for her that is softening his usually dark set eyes. She wipes her tears with her sleeve, not wanting anyone else to see. She wonders what Derry thinks.

I heard you scream, are you alright?

"...uuungh...more or less. I feel sort of groggy though...like I'm a step from falling apart." She stands up under her own power shakily, before he can do anything 'knightly' like extending a hand or a shoulder. Though she feels there's a certain endearment to that, something she might enjoy, she doesn't want to be just another princess to be rescued-something in her heart has always fought against the notion. It's a momentary struggle to keep her balance, to keep from keeling back down to the comfortable floor, but she wins this too-not wanting to be seen as weak....

"No treasure, huh? What sort of magic was that..." She grouses, moving toward the open door slowly. She looks up at Derry. "Owch. Feels like the time we wandered into that next of Zingers, huh, Derry?"

She remembers the day-Derry and her had tried to explore alone that day, and they had got into a fight over something, but it wasn't an angry fight. It was like both of them were waiting for something special to happen. And of course, Bethany had punched a tree-and an entire army of wasplike zingers had angrily droned forth from the hollow log, stinging them horribly for the mile they ran, before they both hopped into a river, yelling and cursing and laughing and helping each other stagger home. They had spent the next week covered in painful, itchy red welts-being taunted by the others, but it was a memory they had shared together. Just the two of them.

Action: Might as well see outside!

No matter the painfulness of that memory and the week that followed it, Derry had to chuckle.
Yeah, I know. Bloody hell Beth, when I heard you scream...

You emerge from the room and find yourselves on a floating island. Unlike your home, which has open fields, forests and an entire city upon it, this one is significantly smaller. Its essentially a floating pile of stone, with this blank square structure you awoke in resting atop it. The ground only stretches about a metre and a half in every direction before ending abruptly in ragged edges, as if it was torn from the earth itself.

Clouds surround you, masking what lies below or above. This instills in each of you a sense of unease. There were always occasional wisps that floated up above the city, but the clouds themselves were almost always far below, creating a massive landscape, an impenetrable barrier that never shifted. Everyone knew that you could go through the clouds, but no one ever thought that there could be anything underneath. In the lives of all your ancestors no one had ever even entertained the notion of trying to go below the clouds. But now that they were so close, that they were tugging gently at your hair and clothes, none of you were sure just what to think.
