The Dojo!
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:44:53 pm »

So I've started an aboveground fortress based upon kicking dwarves. I gave all my starting dwarves 5 kicking. I've got em training in groups of 3, one training group has a teacher, but as of yet they only have done dodging demonstrations.

Hopefully, I can get some legendary kickers.

update
They have started sparring, but they are mostly punching/wrestling. I wonder if there is a reliable way to remove my dwarves' arms.

update2
Woot! Kicking demonstration!

I actually start a fortress with the exact same plan, today. My training session ended with a wrestling throw that tore the dwarves spine in half.
The same dwarf then killed his next partner in a similar fashion.

Jeesh, someone trains hard. Maybe you should stick a captured Goblin on a chain and make it that guys dedicated training dummy.

Goblins are just as fragile as dwarfs. Even if you were as dishonourable as filthy humans and used prisoners for sport, they only provide very little combat practice per goblin, unless you keep the goblin fully armoured (not an option with thieves) and/or level them up in a danger room before sending them to play with your dwarfs. A properly-managed training squad takes a while to get results, but produces militarydwarfs with very well-rounded attributes and skills, and very reliably.

I think sparring dwarfs preferably use whatever weapon they have equipped (including crossbows), and bare hands if they have no weapon - either punching or wrestling. Which makes training via sparring a bad choice when trying to get high-level unarmed specialists, throws will happen and have a serious chance of maiming and outright death for all involved.

If you want dwarves to kick more than punch, there's actually an easy way to make it happen

Just go to creature_standard, find the attacks under 'Attack definitions are formatted as follows:'

Each attack has a priority using the ATTACK_PRIORITY tag, either MAIN or SECOND

For dwarves, punching is by default their MAIN, while kicking, scratching and biting are SECOND.

If you change that around, you can get dwarves who prefer to kick/scratch/bite by making that attack ATTACK_PRIORITY:MAIN and punching ATTACK_PRIORITY:SECOND

Remember, you'll have to do the edit in data/save/region(whatever) for it to affect your current save.

Even leather armour seems to block the skidding damage, but to remove fatal or crippling throws altogether you should have a metal helm, mail shirt, and leggings on each wrestler. They're still pretty good at breaking their wrists and ankles with just those items, so add metal gauntlets and metal boots unless you'd like a bit of XP for your medical team.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

First we tried telling the patient that he was actually alright but he proved resistant to our encouragements and had redoubled his efforts to convey to us that he was in pain. We have concluded that his ankle is actually broken and are presently removing his lungs, which we believe to be the source of the problem.

I just deconstructed the first dwarven caravan. Hopefully, I get plenty of leather gear and leather from it. I am trying to avoid high encumbrance, so I'll be rolling leather armor until I descend down to harvest the bluemetal.

Or I'll get sieged first and destroyed.

Would it be better to make candy armor or candy clothes for my soldiers? Does it come down to quality (armor) vs quantity (cloth)? Or is forged candy armor better all around with the exception that it cannot be dyed?

Update: Clothing wears out. Nevermind.

Candy clothes can't be dyed - you can dye the thread but not the cloth, and when you weave dyed thread, the dye will be removed.

It also isn't rigid, which I suppose is alright if you don't mind broken bones and brain soup.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

I just fought off the first seige. Three casualties, mostly fresh migrant recruits.

I have been running leather/shield, and have two 5 man archer squads at this point, and around ~30 wrestlers. The battle mostly consisted of the dwarves bashing things with shields (a couple were featherwood, ugh) and getting peppered by the bolts.

This is not what I was going for. I am hesitant to strip the melee dwarves of their shields, however.

None of my original 7 have advanced beyond proficient kicker. Most recruits are around novice or adequate after a year of training. (4 months on, 2 months off.)

I dug down to the magma sea, looking for adamantium. The spire is not much use. Maybe I can find another (hope). When the dwarven caravan comes back, I'll buy all the steel they have and melt it down to start making steel shields. I don't know though. As near as I can tell, there is a direct correlation between shield bash and weight, and whereas a shield' defense is inversely related to its weight.

Maybe I'll find silver.

Copper is optimal for shields as it's heavy, don't waste steel on that. Material will matter more with armor.
