I ignore MLP like I ignored the Tellytubbies. Fads come and go. In a few years, everyone will have moved on to the next one and forgotten "bronies" was ever a thing.

The thing is, you shouldn't feel threatened by a fad, nor pressured into liking it when it becomes inexplicably popular. I've yet to encounter someone who was genuinely outraged that I had no interest in MLP, but if I ever did, I'd politely excuse myself from the conversation and leave them to it. Some people go crazy over it and it's best not to be around those people anyway.

Sort of not on the same level. Tellytubbies was popular for toddlers and younger (or more specifically for parents to shill on their kids).

As well there was nothing confusing about that show, nor weird, nor objectionable about it.

At least I have personally never heard of a large adult following for Teletubbies mostly because it is a show for really really young children.

I have no idea, to be honest. It's a nice enough show, well made, good core values...

I don't really like it myself, but I can appreciate that it's as above, well made and quite a sweet show without being saccharine. I don't enjoy it mainly because I find it too sweet for my liking.

As what was stated by Neonivek before, Telletubies never had an alternate demographic or Internet presence. The only controversy that Telletubies ever stirred up was the purple one being gay somehow.

And while the Teletubbies was short-lived, the My Little Pony franchise has been around for over twenty years. By the time Friendship is Magic has ended, it's most likely that the next installment will be in the conception process. There's no way Hasbro is going to stop making a show that became way more popular than it was intended to.

The second paragraph brings up the classical double-edged sword of Obsession and Hatedom. I've had several encounters over the Internet of those who I believe to some level are hooked onto the show like a drug. But equally, and probably more common, I've encountered people who see MLP as the sign of the end of masculinity and spend much of their time attempting to undermine the fanbase.

While I'm surprised you've never met an obsessed person online, I very much doubt you would meet them in real life. These type of people are mostly anti-social recluses, and if you encountered one in public, would either be too shy to say anything to you or you'd be able to tell they have issue based on visual cues. Since the encounter would most definitely occur online, you couldn't excuse yourself really, you'd have to block your harasser through some means via whatever media you're using. I've been in the situation myself on the opposite end with a disgruntled individual continually messaging me things to the extent of "YOU'RE A BRONY GO KILL YOURSELF YOU AUTISTIC FAGGOT".

If there is one thing I like about the internet is that it gives those obsessive recluses a community.

It is very lonely to be the only person who likes something a lot.

It comes with the issue with trolls, but honestly... a double edged sword is always superior to a stick.

MLP is basically the new Naruto as far as fanbases are concerned. It's like, whether or not you like the show, some of the people who dedicate themselves to it are just so goddamn annoying.

My two cents!

Personally, I started watching it because... colors, general visual aesthetics and how it turned a mind numbing thing into something with actual story that I'd want to watch. Hell, I didn't even know about bronies other than the random Rainbow Dash in videos(Which I had assumed was a meme at the time) so really, I was just really ignorant of the MLP fanbase and such.

But I digress. While I would say that it isn't mind numbing, there are some still very stupid things that I can say flat out sucked(AliTwi is not one of them :P) but I won't go into it as I'm sure you don't care about the rantings of some guy on the internet. I, like I said, enjoy the visual appeal, the aesthetics and pretty much how it looks and for me, that's been how I've found most other shows.

Anyway, enough of my ranting. My two cents are in the big pile of cents, and I bid you ado. THis will probably be my only post in this thread, so don't expect a response.

I'm undecided myself whether I watch it because I think it's genuinely good, or because it's not nearly as bad as it should have been.

I haven't watched it, I have nothing against those who do, either. I haven't given it a try because I knew it'd just be too...oversaturated for me. Think of it like this: to me, MLP is like a cupcake with too much frosting on it. It's just too sweet, and when I try to eat it, I just feel a bit sick.

I don't know what the humor is like, but if it's any good, that might be enough to convince me to watch an episode or two.

Well from what I remember of the internet1, any popularity the My Little Pony franchise had before their tv series was pretty much ironic2, and this opened the window for people to indulge in the show once that was released. Then people found they liked it? I guess? As for why, you might as well ask why we like anything3. It doesn't really matter what specific mechanisms were built in, what matters is that it was designed to be attractive to a specific kind of person.

1That is to say, what my observation bias of a culture tells me.
2No not real irony, internet irony. You know, pretending to like things purely to invoke emotions of discomfort in others.
3Primarily playing on our need for individuality while at the same time complying to a standard. The 'beauty marks' on those ponys rears play the same role as the astrological signs on the Homestuck trolls. It invites you to imagine your own character, and then comes the emotional attachment. If you want a highly successful series, you need to give each protagonist a unique identifier that go together into some sort of set. Having various races with their own attributes also helps. Ok, this isn't the only reason why we like things, or even MLP:FiM but it is a huuuge pull factor.
