Weird problems with coffins
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:24:28 pm »

Hi all

I have several problems with coffins.

1)  My stocks said i have 4 but i can only see one in the stockpile.  I tried watching the coffin maker who never seemed to move more than half a dozen squares from the workshop yet i still can't find them and i now have 8!!

2) The one i did find was in a custom stockpile - but i couldn't find coffins anywhere in the stockpile lists - did i just miss them or do they come under something else.

3) When i tried to "Q" the one coffin i had found i couldn't because all i got was the stockpile Q menu - any way around this?  I tried removing the stockpile zone but it still didn't work as Q still picked up nearby stockpiles rather than let me access the coffin.  I have now dumped it but still couldn't Q it in the dump as a workshop was to near (about 2 squares).

I'm assuming can't actually be using them for anything as they haven't been set to be useable.  Also assuming they can't be stored in bins etc.

Am hoping someone can sort me out.

Many thanks

remember coffins have different names depending on what they're made from:
glass, stone - coffin
wood - casket
metal - sarcophagus
1) You can check the location of he coffins through the stock menu, or you can have 1 dump zone (deactivate the rest) and have the coffins dumped through the stocks menu and the dwarfs should bring them to he active zone
2) If I remember right coffins go under furniture
3) You have to build the coffin first. Through the build menu you should pick burial receptacle

your dwarves may be lazy at their hauling or you do not have enough space in your stockpiles so the coffins are building up at the workshop

That was my first thought as well. Use "t" to see the items in a workshop.

From the stock screen, you can also list individual coffins rather than coffins (8), I think by pressing [tab]. If you select a coffin, you can zoom to its location, I think using the z key.

this bit sorted me - though in my defense i think the wikki is misleading for new players as, unlike your comments it just says build rather than "Through the build menu you should pick burial receptacle"

many thanks

Another bit it seems you might have missed is that (if you have a bookkeeper keeping perfect track of all items) you can zoom to an item from the Stocks (z) screen. If there are 8 coffins or caskets or what have you, you can zoom to each. (if they're in the workshop still, then you'd have to use "t" to see them once you zoomed, because you'll be looking at the workshop.

thanks, because i assumed the key was non functional

i had tried the Z key but it didn't work - from memory it didn't take to the workshop, just stayed on the stock screen.

This thread should be titled "Reasons why I use slabs instead of coffins"
