Armor and capes
« on: July 05, 2013, 11:17:30 am »

The layers are, in order from inner to outer:
Under
Over
Armor
Cover

So, does that mean I can have my dwarfs wear one of each, right?
example:
Leather Shirt
Steel Mail Shirt
Steel Breastplate
Leather Cloak

And the bigger problem is how to get them to wear it properly, without job cancellation spam.

iirc, they can wear about 3 mail shirts, so your assumption of 1 item per sub-layer is incorrect. The only limit is on shaped items - 1 per body part. So either a helm or a cap, not both. The current dressing AI is quite smart - compared to previous versions, but yes, they sometimes have trouble putting on anything on the 'under' layer if they have armor or 'over' items. Back when armor didn't count for cover (34.07 or so? .04 maybe?) that almost cost me a fort as they didn't put on trousers and got emberrassed at being uncovered

Nope, read the confusing magmawiki article on armor layering, just like everyone else had to.

That's why I asked so someone can explain to me that confusing article

Every piece of armor has a number for how big it is, and a number for how much other clothing/armor can be worn underneath it.  So, for example, if you have 30 points of "under" layer armor (for example, three shirts), then put on a breastplate (size 20), you can still put on a mail shirt (which can be worn over up to 50 points of armor).  There's nothing in the "Armor" layer that can be worn over more than 50 points of stuff, but at this point you can still wear some "cover" layer stuff, such as capes, which can be worn over up to 300 points of armor (so you can stack on a lot of capes).

That's the main rule of armor layering, anyway.  The other rules (such as the ordering you described, and the "only one shaped item per body part") also apply.

You can layer if you want to, but it isn't really necessary.  My soldiers just have 1 layer of steel armor pieces for the most part, though I do stack breastplates and mail shirts, since the mail also covers the arms.  Dodge and shield skills take care of the rest.  I do suffer casualties every now and then, but the odds are so heavily stacked in favor of steel-clad dwarves, that I don't mind throwing the goblins a bone.

Yeah, it's mostly just the best piece of armor on each body part that matters (including arm links, leg links and facial features, which are protected by UBSTEP, LBSTEP and UPSTEP).  You need to have an armor piece that can stop the attack - if no one piece of your armor can do that, the attack most likely won't be stopped (though forcing the weapon to push through a lot of material does have a small effect).

it does. It's why my fortres bred giant king cobras were not piercing skin on most tries due to the growth bug they had tiny fangs and why escaped demons posing as deities are so tough to kill with conventional means as they wear clothing. Enormously big and thick clothing. It's been theorized that 'untold layers of fat' will help protect against some injuries by softening blows and providing depth against penetration weapons

Okay, gigantic creatures are bugged to where clothing thickness increases in proportion to the creature's volume, so that doesn't really count.

It's true that thicker clothing and/or fat has some effect, but it's insignificant compared with getting armor of a better material, at least against edged weapons.  Against blunt weapons, layering is probably worth a try - I don't think there's been much testing done on that point.
