Dissent in the United States
« on: July 05, 2013, 02:01:24 am »

It has become clear to myself, acquaintances of mine, and many others on the internet and elsewhere through conversation, discussion, information, and personal experience, that dissent towards the American government is rising.

For the purposes of discussion what do you think about this, its causes, and how it may affect America in the future?

I doubt the continent will care. After all, on a geological timescale it's almost like you don't exist.

That could be said for the entire world and is slightly irrelevant.

What do I expect to happen? Nothing.

Some people may protest for a few days and go home, or vote for the other suspiciously similar political party, but that's about it.

Dissent within America towards the government, or dissent on a geo-political scale? If the former, this is just another stage where people pretend to get pissed off at the government, then forgot what they were pissed off about and forgot about any kind of reform ever. People nowadays in America simply just don't have that kind of devotion when it comes to politics anymore, little to no people do. If you mean on a geo-political scale, then sure people will be pissed. But every other "Great Power" in the world has an equally fucked up government, just in their own special, shitty way.

What about the financial problem? The dollar is held up by very little other than oil money at the moment, seeing as Nixon stole everyone's gold back in the 70's.

It still won't matter. Unless the dollar takes another drastic drop again, and we go into some kind of a depression similar to the one in the 1930's (And don't say we're currently in a depression, we're not) then it won't happen. Unless the unlikely happens, we'll still retain our place as a world "leader" due to our influence. I'm not saying this in a patriotic "Fuck yeah, america!" kind of way. I'm saying this because we legitimately have influence in much of the world, hell a good chunk of U.N. funding comes from the U.S.A.

On an internal level, the only thing that will increase political interest and political dissent is an economic depression. But I'm talking a complete major drop of the economy, to the point people would get very, very desperate. But that won't happen again for a long time, because currently there are no major signs our economy is worsening significantly. But a depression as severe as the Great Depression (Which is really the only kind of economic slump that'd get everyone's asses into gear again) is very unlikely to happen again, due to the increased inter-dependence of nations in terms of trade and economics the only way we'd fall is if everyone else was falling with us.

People also seem to think an increase of political dissent would increase if the government abused its power substantially, and would actively work to put down the people for more power. This is also extremely unlikely, because as long as everyone is still getting by decently enough, literally no one would care. You might say, "But I value my privacy! I'd fight for it!" but would you really if the government inexplicably became authoritarian? No, you'd not want to take any chances, and figure as long as you're living decently you can deal with it. The only kind of political shift we'd see is if the economy went into the shitter, which it won't for awhile.

The last part was completely composed of random ramblings, and everything else I pretty much just repeat myself. So yeah, take this with whatever legitimacy you choose to give it.

- There's the college debt bubble, the USA's fairly massive debt and deficit, and the large trade deficit with China. Enough room for economical problems there.

Yes, those are all very bad economic issues. But do I foresee them getting worse? Probably not. I'm not optimistic in the slightest, but these don't seem like things that'll bring everything crashing down. College students will eventually all get pissed off, and form a protest group that will probably last the same amount of time the Occupy movement lasted and then fizzle out. Everyone will just bitch about the massive debt and deficit, but forget about it when they realize they'll actually have to find out a solution to it instead of just saying it should be fixed. The trade deficit with China won't result in anything, because we're both heavily dependent on each other and their not going to get their largest trade partner pissed off.

Then again, this is a completely uneducated view written when I can barely keep my eyes open, so I'm probably just full of shit.

Maybe you are just noticing that due to your changing age and the geopolitical views of you and your circle of friends?

Hardly. I live in the Chicago area, the majority of people here, especially racial minorities, are democrats and Obama supporters. However, many people I know from social workers to former pastors to members of the Army Reserve who were initially supportive of the government's policies and Obama are now becoming far less so.

Personally, i think our best shot at strong dedicated dissent rely's on getting to (even more) uncomfortable levels of technology and realizing the capacity of abuse.
