Seconding the plan with the rocks, with the addition that before doing so we should inspect the circle to make sure it is not made of easily-broken chalk lines of cut-rate doom containment, and when starting we should try and throw a rock over it rather than actively magically holding the rock there.
No no, I wasn't saying move the rock into the circle, just near enough to it that if it's proximity triggered, we won't have it blow in our face if we walk close enough to look at it.

The glove of mage hand is practically the opposite of mentalism. Mentalism involves doing magic with no equipment, and the magic glove (as far as I can tell) does a magic effect using only equipment.

For future reference (because we certainly don't have the power/resources now), could we theoretically use time magic to get a preview the potential future of us stepping into the circle?
A limited sort of precognition? I won't say it's impossible, but it is certainly far beyond my current abilities. At a wild guess, I'd need to carefully regulate the ratio of present and future aspects in a pair of glasses to throw only my senses forward in time... And at the moment, such regulation is a complete mystery to me.

Correct. Mentalists require very little training, and can access a broad range of magic with nothing but the raw materials. In exchange though, they are limited only to those spells they can completely hold in their minds at once - any complex magical device can work wonders far beyond even the greatest mentalist, but is also a significant investment of resources.

Anyway, after a cautious approach through use of my glove, I'm able to get close enough for a better look at the magic circle without triggering it's effects... Barely. The stone I used to test it's reaction to motion triggered a reaction a mere step past the point I was able to get a decent look at it, and is now glowing a bright blue - same as the circle itself is.

((Bah, can't get transparency working right...))

There aren't any monsters in this "dungeon," companions would just slow us down and trigger traps.

Wouldn't it be easier to enchant the glasses to throw light backwards in time?
...Probably! It wouldn't be that hard--a couple of temporal portals behind the lenses and bound to the frames!

Hmm, what about having double lenses, with the space in between containing some past-infused liquid the portal is submerged in?

What about giving the portal a "thickness" so that it doesn't have to "jump" all the way at once but can rather "travel" gradually?

Would making only one lens magical make it take up only half the resources to maintain? That might be better anyway; you can instantly switch between it and normal by closing one eye or the other. Even learn to use both at once if you don't mind the nausea. Also, half of the frame not housing it's own portal gives that more space to host supporting infrastructure for maintaining the one that do, so it might actually be *more* than a doubling in efficiency.

Yeah, one lens makes it easier.

Some kind of past-infused liquid or something might also open up the possibility of altering how far it looks, depending on how it works.
