Archery Training
« on: July 03, 2013, 08:44:01 am »

So I have build a marksdwarf squad of 10. I have assigned them Archery uniform. I have assigned bone and wooden bolts for training. I have assigned them a sleeping barracks with beds and weapon racks and armor stands. I have assigned them training barracks with archery targets and i have assigned shooting direction (racks is 5*10 long with 10 archery targets). I have activated the squad.

Still no one trains. Not every body has quivers (though i should have at least 6). There is enough crossbows and bolts for every one. Most don't have full uniform. One of the dwarf's job tag is "go to archery practice" but he is just chilling in meeting area? So what do i need to do to make this dwarfs train before goblins and mega beasts invade my brave fortress.

Solved. New question. So i need to make every individual archery target into archery range? My dwarfs only seem to practice on one archery range in the room.

Yup, each one needs to be q'ed and set up like the first.

Just a bit of "advice" from what I found my guys doing. Setting them to use separate bolt types for training and combat they seem to use whatever is on hand to fight with. But I might just be doing it wrong.

which you can find on the wiki.

Really, the wiki is a great help and answers many questions

setting different bolts for training and combat used to cause problems, such as dwarfs having to do several tries to go and get combat bolts or even not getting combat (or training) bolts. Wood and bone bolts actually do a pretty decent job, so I just mix everything up for combat bolts, though metal bolts are not for training. Then again, I'm a great believer in live target practise, so they don't see the archery targets that often anyway

What do I need to do to get my archers to pick up ammo when they are out while using a live target range or firing on a siege/ambush?

I remember someone saying something about using a patrol so they duck around a corner and load up automatically before returning to shoot some more, but I can't seem to get mine to do anything other than run circles along the route without grabbing any of the ammo layed out in next room.

Rep, I simply issue a squad move order to go stand on the ammo pile (which is out of sight of combat).  The out of ammo dwarves will head there and reload while the ones with ammo continue to fire until dry.

Alright, that's pretty much what I had been doing before. Was just trying to figure out an easier way. Hasn't really been an issue with my current fort though, as all but two of my ten man crossbow squad rotted to death during their first legit time being in combat.
