Looks pretty sweet, though I do prefer the survival genre more than the survival horror one (in agreement with the above poster) but hey - I'll give it a go.

So this game tasks the player with surviving in an open world wilderness setting. The player is able to craft and build things to help them with this task. There are monsters who live in caves and come out at night to attack the player.

Yep, this is Minecraft with shinier graphics alright.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

U mad? Minecraft really isn't much of a survival game...at all. Sure hostile creatures spawn at night, but the focus of minecraft is creativity, allowing players to play around with the world as they would with lego.
This game however, seems a lot more focussed on survival instead of building a castle out of dirt.

Saw this on RPS a week or two ago. I suppose I didn't think there was enough meat on its bones yet.

I'm interested, as usual. But I'm not a wilderness survival game fanatic.

Observe "Hurrdurr Minecraft clone" in the worst way.

Did we forget the horror setting?

Or even if we DO compare it to minecraft, let's observe the lack of blocks, no ability to change the terrain, extremely limited building ability (ie: no coblestone penis towers), and something that looks like an actual plot?

It's also in first-person and you can die.  Do we want to call this a HALO clone as well?

Technically as this is a PC game and since Pong was one of the first PC games I declare this and Minecraft to be Pong clones... Minecraft is just pong where the player is the paddle and the world is the ball...

Mind... Blown...

Is it just me or are Minecraft fanboys honestly the most pants-on-head 'special' of all fanboys?

On a related note: If you do not want this game. GET OUT OF MY REALITY.

Meh, looks okay. I probably wouldn't play it, since it's not the sort of thing that I could get into, but I can appreciate that it's a good game.

Not sure why the response to me was "OMG, that guy is a Minecraft fanboy. He's pants-on-head crazy". I'm pretty sure that's not even close to being my reputation on this forum.

The fact is that all we have seen of this game so far is a guy walking around a forest, building some stuff ala Stranded, and then exploring a really dark cave full of monsters. That is the entire known feature list. I'm going to be far from the only reasonable person to draw the comparison to Minecraft before they announce some more features.

I'm going to have to preemptively side with Neonivek on this one and say there's no reason to get excited just yet.

That's like saying Call of Duty is a clone of Plants VS Zombies because both have graphics.

Minecraft was not the first game to ever do crafting or survival...

But it was the most successful one, and that thought instantly springs into mind. For me it wasn't "It looks just like minecraft!" though, it was "If minecraft looked like this.. i might actually give a damn".

The images and intro show nothing, all we have is a concept. Fucking Big Wheels had a decent concept.. Just putting it out there.

Wait and see, don't hype it, because it will pressure the project and possibly break it.

Uhm with the feature list if you checked the website you would have found this:

The Forest is an open world survival horror game currently in development for PC.

Build, explore, survive in this terrifying first person survival horror simulator.

The world

Enter a living, breathing forest with changing weather patterns, plants that grow and die. Tides that roll in and out with the day/night cycle.  Below ground explore a vast network of caves and underground lakes.

Complete player freedom

Chop down trees to build a camp, or start a fire to keep warm. Scavenge food to keep yourself from starving.  Find and plant seeds to grow food.

Build a small shelter or a large ocean side fortress. decorate your home with found items. Lay traps and defenses to keep a safe perimeter.

Gameplay

Explore and build during the day. Defend your base at night. Craft weapons and tools.Bunker down during the evening or bring the fight directly to the enemy.

Fight or Hide

Use stealth to evade enemies, or engage them directly with crude weapons built from sticks and stones.

A new type of open world, survival horror experience

Defend yourself against a clan of genetic mutant enemies that have beliefs, families and morals and that appear almost human.

It's a little more than what you said ( not much but still )

I'm quite curious at how the mutants are going to be simulated.

You know, for the lily-livered gamers amongst us (myself included) who would settle for more survival-simulation than terror-simulation, I'm sure there's going to be a yellow bellied scaredy cat mode where there's no monsters or scary bits.  At least some mod should take care of that.  Just a sandbox world free of faceless daemon spleen-eaters, where you can terraform to your heart's content ala Minecraft.

But either way I must have this game if it's half as good as it looks in the pre-alpha trailer.

Computer games can be immersive and when your playing by yourself in a dark room then it can be pretty damn scary even though you know it's completely harmless to you.

To be honest im a big scardey cat so I don't go for horror games too much but I do like survival games and this looks very interesting. I will take sandbox horror over on-rails anyday.
