The question is, of course, why not just use a 3D printer?

It's probably when you need to make something really precise, like that Monosword.

Monoswords wouldn't be that useful. For one thing, they'd likely be brittle. The count-the-molecules-sharp-but-rather-fragile macuahuitls weren't much good against the Conquistadores, for instance.

they'd be made from nanomaterials, which would, by the time this game is set, be several hundred times (at least) stronger than steel, maybe even several thousand times stronger.

I'd be impressed with any material that manages to be strong and non-brittle despite being only a few molecules thick.

Even diamond is brittle. Even steel, although it's usually malleable first.

The edge is thin, the blade is not. There's some weight to them.

Game is updated.

The edge is the part that you worry about getting chipped. Because, you know, once that edge breaks off you have a glorified and rather expensive club.

Self-sharpening, perhaps?

Nanobots. Also, even though I'm note sure how, apparently depleted uranium shells are self-sharpening.

Wait, you would make the blade out of nanobots...and "extremely sharp blade" is the best thing you can think of?

It's not made of nanobots. They swarm over it to keep the blade sharp between uses. Like, in the sheath. That's half the reason for a sheath, in this case. The other half is so you don't lose your leg and not notice until you can't walk.

How would that work? Nano-whetstones?

...Probably as good as anything else, as long as you turned off the whetters after letting them get it razor-sharp again.

Why would someone have to manually turn it off?

Computers, man! COMPUTERS!

Nanobots wont need to know things. they will (most likely) be controlled by a powerful overseer bot which in turn is commanded by a central computer.

OR, each nanobot could contain a nano-scale quantum computer (which works, as the only working quantum computers we have at the moment are on the nano-scale).

Or there could be a computer in the sheath that shuts off power after 5 seconds or so of nano-whetting.
