While we shouldn't be planning that far ahead, if that comes up I want to say:

"I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy."
Oh, god please do.

Ghazkull, so you're the sheriff, right? I'm thinking we both want to get rich, and I come up with the plan to do so, and come to you with it.

Scrapheap, what if you had a contact with someone associated in the bank, and that's why I needed you.

Or maybe scapheap is the manager of the bank.

The ranch hands might work for the owner of the bank - I'm betting anyone with money to build a bank has some lands that need tending.

So, anyone that at least wants to give us a name and some background? If we can't agree on exact details later, we'll figure them out while we play.

Well, let's think.

Definite Speculative

Ghazkull is the sheriff and intends to rob the bank with Scelly, his lover.
I am the deputy and a gambler. He needs to get even with the sheriff, and the rifle is key to his plan for doing so.
scapheap is a ranch manager and owner of the bank. He gambles with the deputy and presumably some other people. He owns the rifle, presumably some sort of valuable antique or something.
Scelly works at the ranch and helps manage the bank's finances. She intends to rob the bank with Ghaz.

Good for a starting point?

So, how about this: the rifle was originally property of the sherrif, and locked away in the sherrif's office weapon closet. The deputy, who had access to the sherrif's weapon stash, used it as betting money, and the bank manager won it from him - so now the deputy needs to get the rifle back.

Hm. Not what I had in mind, nor am I sure how that would constitute "getting back" at him.
Hm, although it is getting back to him, and explains why he would also want it...

Well, it could be the other way round, if Ghazkull was deputy and you (GWG) the sherrif, that'd indeed fit the 'getting even' a bit more.

Well, the deputy had a family heirloom rifle, that the sheriff confiscated and gambled away to the bank owner. The sheriff had a change of heart, or however you call it, maybe spent a few years going cold turkey on the gambling, and feels guilty now, so he wants the deputy to have his rifle back.
