Your change in weight is a simple formula: Calories Eaten minus Calories Burned = Weight Lost/Gained.

Wrong.  Humans are not simple combustion engines.

I am living evidence of this. I was at 190lbs - I'm tall, so that was "skinny". My thyroid basically quit functioning , and I gained 50lbs in about a year and half time.
Of course, at that time , I had no idea what was going on. When I first saw the 20lb gain,I went on a diet.
I was eating 1800 calories a day - which means I should have been losing 1lb every 5 days if compared to my basal metabolic rate (~2550 calories a day).  This is very little food. That became my new "maintenance" calorie requirements. In order for me to lose weight that I put on, I had to go to about 1400 calories.

But even with an extreme case like that, that's only really a difference of 500 calories from BMR and that's a "major" metabolism problem. I find it hard to believe there are people out there that really are more than 50% off from their BMR.

Back to the central point of the thread, if you truly eat 1000 calories above your BMR on a daily basis, you should really put on weight fast.
1000 calories isn't that hard to do in murica, regardless of stomach size. There are a lot of very, very calorie dense foods that don't fill the stomach.
Off the top of my head, that's :
1 large milkshake from fast food place
1 large bowl of ice cream
2 pieces of pizza
2 peanut butter sandwiches
3-4 20oz full calorie sodas

I hate to say it, but gaining weight with "healthy" food isn't that easy to do. Nor is it easy to do by weightlifting alone.

Back when I was studying so hard I didn't have time to eat, and working so hard I couldn't afford to have no energy, I went with the most calorie dense and convenient foods I could find.  A few strips of jerky and a handful of trail mix provides a lot of energy in very little volume.

Muscle is harder to gain than fat, and I bet your body fat is a bit under normal anyway. At this juncture in your life, put your faith in lard. It's perfectly edible as a bread spread with a bit of salt and paprika.

Interesting stuff. I was hoping this would turn into a disguise and perception thread :P. Still, useful.

I also got a fast metabolism and tried to gain weight last year. The old formula of "Squats and Gallons of milk" will always work. I only learned from it that I didn't feel as comfortable with that weight, which I have lost in the last months again.

If you don't feel comfortable and are desperate for weight, try it. But "weight for numbers only" is not worth it.

When I needed to gain muscle and weight, I began eating Kabana and Quinoa. Both of those are comparable to jerky + trail mix. Kabana I find to be better merely because it keeps very well - i'd go for hikes and take a couple of sticks of kabana and some boiled quinoa in an esky-bag, and eat them when I got to the summit. I gained about sixty pounds in a year, mostly muscle, doing that.

As a small suggestion when you start doing weights, try to look up how to properly do weights and the different exercises you can do with them.

A lot of people tend to do what I call the centrifugal shoulder lift.

Try to eat at least 100g of protein a day. Lift heavy weights. Look up Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe if you want a routine and a book with a ton of useful information on anatomy, strength training, proper form, etc. Eat until you seriously feel uncomfortable, and then three hours later, eat again. You might start pooping five times a day as a result, jlyk  :-X.

Your change in weight is a simple formula: Calories Eaten minus Calories Burned = Weight Lost/Gained.

Wrong.  Humans are not simple combustion engines.

I think it's simpler to break it down like this, though. A caloric deficit (or surplus) is a sensible, measured way to lose (or gain) weight. If you tell people that a pound of bodyfat is roughly 3500 kcals, and that if they maintain a 500 kcal daily deficit they should expect to lose roughly a pound of bodyfat a week, they can set clearer goals and get less sidetracked with ridiculous fad diets.

If worst comes to worst, you can always sew washers into your undergarments when you go to mepps. :p
Heh. Don't you have to take your clothes off when you weigh in? :P
