I'm not going to have time to play for a couple days, so I'll have to pass on the rest of my turn. Sorry about that. Here's the save file if you want to continue where I left off.

Looks like it's my turn to run this undwarfy fort dwarf metropolis.

12th Hematite, Early Summer

The first thing I do is order a mining shaft going all the way down. This place is not dwarfy enough. Also, I dwarfed myself as the miner/broker.

21 Hematite

The merchants just left. The digging continues, with two silver veins and one sphalerite vein found, along with two kimberlite veins (which hopefully have diamonds and other gems in them).

9 Malachite

Success! The mining shaft found the lowest cavern level!


Even better, there was an adamantine spire!

Work must immediately start to get some of it.

13 Malachite

Deep mining revealed the magma sea. Additionally, there have been no mining accidents yet.

"Cerol Osestbomrek, clothier is taken by a fey mood!" I hope he makes something useful...

27 Malachite

The adamantine vein is mined out as much as seems safe. Further mining will require precautions to prevent cases of FUN, !!FUN!!, and mass dwarf death.

Stone stocks are looking good. I might want to mine out a bit more stone though.

I set up a temporary adamantine refinery. Once the map is cleared of adamantine, it can be removed.


Since I'm also finishing Mouseshy's turn, I've decided to start on a 15 z-level tower that goes a ways up. It's not like we'll run out of stone, and it'll train our masons. I'm planning on making it

2 Limestone

I finally got around to trading. The humans had mostly useless things, so I just gave them a few dozen lead bars in return for some wood, cloth, and leather (along with one gold nugget).


9 Limestone

Some rough estimates for the tower I'm building:
88 blocks per level for 15 levels = 1320 blocks, plus a bit more for the roof and rooms at the top.
Work begins on the third layer:

The merchants left. I should have some trade goods made by the time the dwarf caravan arrives. Hopefully they bring another anvil, since we only have one forge right now.


25 Limestone

The miners found yet another silver vein. Since we have 391 silver bars already, I've decided to use silver trap components in trading.

2 Sandstone

The tower is almost 1/3 of the way done.


16 Sandstone

I've discovered that we have WAY too many animals. All the bunnies, lots of cats, and most of the puppies are being slaughtered.


17 Sandstone

Half the tower is finished. After I finish the next floor, I'll let the dwarves stop so they don't all get rusty in their normal skills.

A dwarf just went insane. Luckily, he's just a useless fish dissector. It seems I don't quite have enough clothing.

It's time to make some more bedrooms; we only have 100 beds for 195 dwarves. Also, I've halted work on the tower while more rock blocks are made. It has 9/16 layers finished, along with a stairwell that goes all the way up and a few unfinished layers.

Finally, some combat (if not much). A kobold thief showed up and ran straight at the barracks, a war dog attacked him, a hunter shot him, and then the same hunter bashed his head in with a bronze crossbow.

"Some migrants have arrived". Most migrants were useless, but I did get a great metalsmith and an adequate strand extractor.

2 Timber

Another strange mood, this time it's a child. Hopefully he picks something useful like a forge to make an artifact in.

Later in the day, he claims a craftsdwarf's workshop. Looks like he won't make anything too useful, but he might be good for making trade goods later in life.

Just ordered every tree on the map (except the caverns) cut down. Since we have no coal veins and I haven't moved magma up yet, there is a huge demand for logs to fuel furnaces.

We also got a legendary stone crafter out of this; sadly she is only 6 years old. At least someone down the line will get a legendary stonecrafter.

3 Moonstone

I traded a bit with the traders, but we don't have enough trade goods yet. I did make sure to get all their anvils, though.

Oops.

Two simultaneous accidents caused quite a few deaths. In one, two dwarves were melted by magma. In the other, I had both construction and deconstruction going at once, and there were some unsupported floors. Collapsing floors killed 3 and hurt quite a few more. Luckily, it was only some useless dwarves that died.

23 Moonstone

The traders left. I'd have traded more, but the trader decided to spend several weeks on break. If he wasn't legendary in two skills (and dorfed as me), I'd dump him into the magma sea.

1 Opal

I've decided to start work on the tower again.

There hasn't been much to report; I've just been working on the tower and a second project (I'll say what it is when I finish). However, I found another cavern level.

A miner just mooded!

He claimed a mason's workshop (not a surprise).

I was found dead at the bottom of a long mineshaft. I think I'll turn off mining on the other legendary miner for now.

Also, Nish Udibshem (another miner) is the new broker.

A giant mole got into the mineshaft and walked around for a few days while my military got to it. It's dead now, but it scared all my miners away.

Spring has arrived!

Well, not much happened this season (besides lots of accidents). Mouseshy's turn (and year 4) is finished, now I'll take my turn. The tower is almost done, and I'm working on a method to get magma to the surface fast. Current fort population is 201, with 60 children. Total value is 1734862.

To appease a mood, I'm removing the depot (to get wood) and rebuilding it with rock.

Everything went well, except where I killed almost all the miners. I have some ideas to avoid this when I mine out that area, though.

There's a project I've been working on for most of the time I've been overseer. I'll talk more about it when I'm done, but it's how I killed 10 miners.

Not much to report (besides working on the project) until now.

The fort population is 210, the highest so far. There are finally enough children to replace the dead miners.

I've mostly finished the minecart route from lava to an area for magma forges at the surface. Sadly, there were some problems with picking up magma. This is the project I've been working on.

Spring has arrived!

So, a report of the fortress now.











A note about the minecart-based magma mover: I wasn't quite able to complete it. It needs walls at every turn to stop the minecart from flying off, but I already queued that. However, the top of it needs to be modified to have some track stops to slow the cart. Also, while the magma chamber has doors that seem like they would let the magma out, they are tightly sealed.

The next person needs to give the nobles proper houses in the tower. The baron has a room and a tomb, but not a good enough office or dining room. The mayor needs a lot of things. There will also be some mandates.

Finally, make sure you are careful with the skilled dwarves, especially the legendary miner/talented weaponsmith/accomplished armorsmith and the legendary miner/high master appraiser.

First things first, I dealt with the baron. I queued up some stone toys, and soon a miniforge was made. I also added a floor to two stories of the tower. I made one floor the dining room and one the office.



I then noticed that my dwarves' clothing was seeing a lot of wear. Since we had almost a thousand cloth, I decided to have the manager order some cloth trousers, shirts and shoes to be made to preclude an eventual tantrum spiral.



Additionally, several ghosts were hanging around the fort. Not putting up with any of this nonsense, I had the masons build rock slabs and the engravers carve them into memorials for the various dwarves who went missing, bled to death, or collided with obstacles in 129 and 130 and were never properly buried.



The vast majority of the dwarves were living in shared rooms, four beds all with the same designated space. Because this so drastically reduces the value of the room, I began plans to build a more efficient living space. The children of the fort were eager to help out by tearing up the floor to make room for walls. I also built four more clothier's workshops to keep up with the demand for clothes.



Finally, an elf caravan arrived. I traded some stone crafts and silver crafts for logs, booze, and clothes.

9th Hematite

We ran out of non-economic hard rock, so I designated a layer of dolomite for the miners to dig out. We can't run out of rock blocks!



12th Malachite

I installed floors covering the ground on the upper level of the fortress to prevent trees from popping up everywhere and getting in the dwarves' way.



20th Malachite

The masons are hard at work building a residential tower for the dwarves so they can each have their own room. So far I've made enough rooms to make up for eight of the four-bed rooms on the second level of the fort. As I build the tower, I'm removing the redundant beds from the lower rooms so I don't have to use up too many logs making beds.



I'm using an efficient staggered design; each room's floor is made of the walls below it. This significantly reduces the amount of blocks used.



I also see quite a few discarded articles of clothing lying around. This is a good sign since it means that dwarves are replacing the worn-out clothes with newer articles.

13th Galena



The minotaur Xukong Belchwhipped the Golden Typhoon arrived! I set the marksdwarves up on top of the upper fortress level and send the melee squads out to fight the beast.



Moments later, our bear friend from Agodur arrived! I'm glad the humans pick such friendly bears for their diplomats; I'd hate for them to have angry bears instead.

14th Galena

After a day of fighting, the Earthen Boulders and the Hammers of Hammerin' have overcome the Golden Typhoon. Our war dogs distracted the minotaur as Uzol Matchbolts the swordsdwarf and Uzol Lulledrelic the speardwarf stabbed it to death. Ingish Trumpetvines the hammerdwarf also contributed to the battle, chipping the bone in Xukong's hand.



27th Galena

Human traders arrived shortly after their demon diplomat. I traded away more rock crafts as well as spare tattered clothing in exchange for cages, booze, weapons and cloth.

8th Limestone



The four-year-old Sodel Feralcastles, son of Nish Syrupplanks the fortress's broker, has been possessed. He claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop and immediately set about using up all the adamantine he could get away with.

18th Limestone

I've built enough rooms to get the dwarves out of sharing four beds in one three-by-three room. None of the original small rooms share beds anymore. There are still some larger, five-by-five rooms that share beds, but those are big enough that the room quality is "modest" as opposed to "meager."

20th Limestone



The broker's kid made a functionally useless wood crown. It's valued at 693,600☼, about 13% of the fortress's total created wealth. Crumbleshins is the fourth most valuable artifact Stokershoots has produced.

15th Sandstone

Now that I've supplied the dwarves with adequate housing, I noticed that one of the goals for the fortress is building a harbor. To facilitate this, I built two walls extending out to the coast so that the dwarves can work there safely.



18th Sandstone

We have a legendary+2 cook that's been with the fort four years. She's named Olin Ashcobalt and she has a pet turkey named Zon Bandrock. Zon must've run into a nasty fight a couple years ago because the poor bird's been limping around one one leg this whole time.



I'm tired of seeing that turkey flopping around the screen on the ground, so I decided to put it out of its misery. that turkey's no good anymore with a big gash in its leg. The mayor, Morul Torchgorge built a simple stairway with a wall on top, and then disassembled the bottom stair.



Seconds later...



Zon the turkey was killed instantly when the wall fell and crushed it. The mayor, meanwhile, got caught in a burst of sandy loam and was thrown five tiles to the north. He bounced twice off of the ground. On the first impact, his left lung and pancreas were bruised; on the second, his upper legs were hit. The hunter-turned-mayor finally stopped when his head slammed into the ground, forcing the skull through the brain. I'm not brokenhearted about the mayor's death because that means less mandates. I replaced the late mayor Torchgorge with "alphaBeta" Groovedtraded, the baron, to prevent any more redundant mandates or room requirements.

The human caravan left today. The wagon bridge works like a charm.



22nd Timber

The dwarven caravan from Ingish Logem traded with us. We traded rock crafts and old clothes for booze, weapons, metal bars and armor. Stokershoots also gave as offerings several serrated silver discs in hopes of currying favor with His Majesty Tekkud Boltsystem.

24th Timber

At last, I've eliminated all the overlapping rooms! I had to add on to the barracks building slightly to accommodate a bigger room for Thikut Coppersculpted the captain of the guard and his wife "Dragonslayer" Tradesacks the blacksmith.

17th Moonstone

I began construction on a town hall in the now-open area to the west. It's especially important to have a seat of government because the liaison hinted that he would be upgrading Stokershoot's position within the kingdom.



23rd Moonstone



Just as I'd hoped. Stokershoots has been made the seat of a county! Now that "alphaBeta" Groovedtraded is a count, he requires one additional armor stand.

9th Opal



Albel Inchedroughness, a one-year-old girl, entered a strange mood. She's the daughter of a legendary wood burner and a skilled speardwarf. Albel claimed a craftsdwarf's workshop and then went straight for the adamantine.

18th Opal



Albel creafted a functionally useless raw adamantine mug. Floodwinkle the Spiteful Tenacity is valued at 938,400☼, which is about 16% of all the wealth Stokershoots has ever produced. This mug is the single most valuable object the fort has created. Additionally, Albel is now a legendary stone crafter.

28th Obsidian

A note if you turn adamantine extracting on: the dwarves will use the adamantine string for wounds, so you might want to remove the chests in the hospital and rely on the stockpile.
