Expanded Casteing
« on: June 30, 2013, 06:58:36 am »

I think it would be interesting to expand the ways castes are defined - aside from using it for simply different splits of a race (this one is male, this one is female, this one is male and has horns), adding other functions to castes aside from simply being born into them would be interesting.  Different gate functions could end up allowing a creature to grow into a new caste.  The easiest one I can think of is age - using a goat as an example, perhaps the goat doesn't have horns at first, but when he becomes an adult, he shifts to a caste which does.  Or for a dragon, perhaps a young hatchling can't fly, but as he matures, he develops his wings and firebreath, and perhaps particularly ancient dragons get even nastier tricks.

I suppose you could also just expand age tags in that instance, allowing age gate restrictions for things, similar to how body-size describes how big a creature should be at a certain age, perhaps you could have other tags also include age markers.

Age tag expansion would definitely be a welcome addition. I actually encountered this issue with my recent dabbling in creature creation, and I was pretty disappointed that age castes weren't an already implemented feature.

So yeah, definitely support.

How do you mean? Like some kind of metamorphosis stageing?

That would also be a way for it to work, yeah - I could see handling metamorphosis by having a creature that starts with a larva-like form, then has a caste at a young age where they gain a cocoon-like shell and IMMOBILE, and then finally a year or so later another caste that has FLIER and is a butterfly or moth or giant monster, you know, whatever.

Also like I said, it'd be cool if you could make it so that certain body-parts only grow as the creature matures (young goats start developing full ram horns when they hit maturity, dragons slowly gain flying, fire-breath, and other abilities as they grow to full size, that sort of thing)

Another sore spot is that we can't currently have proper mixed race civs due to the lack of breeding gates, which would be important for the proper institution of slavery and complex tiered societies with multiple classes. What was meant by the age gates, is the effects of puberty. If a goat kid were born with adult horns then well, they wouldn't be "born" in the usual sense since those horns would be REALLY, REALLY bad for momma goat.

We will have mixed race civs, multi-tiered societies and breeding gates and the like eventually. Threetoe has confirmed this in one of his stories.
