Stubborn Traders
« on: June 11, 2008, 03:30:00 pm »

I've recently made a fortress built into a cliffside. Originally, even though I had an accessible depot, the merchants 'bypassed my fortress'.

Now, I don't really like savescumming, but considering that was essentially a glitch that would've destroyed my settlement, I reloaded and built four trade depots until they finally found one they liked.

Now, the liaison is talking to my leader, but the caravan itself unpacks for a while... and suddenly up and leaves.

I've got a metric ton of mechanisms to unload, so am I cluttering the depot and causing them to leave? If that isn't it, what's happening?

I've had that happen to me a few times, usually if the caravan has been ambushed or my broker/administrator has died before a liason meeting could be conducted.

This is incredibly stupid. They're leaving without a word now.

Is there anyway I can hack an anvil into my game? I refuse to let this screw up my save.

There are lots of bugs involved with multiple depots.  Might be worth destroying the ones that they won't use and see if that fixes it.

Better yet, make a way that you can kill them whilst they're in the depot. Then, take their stuff. They deserve it.

Just saying, magma won't melt steel anvils, so this might be a valid idea.

Awesome, destroying the other depots worked.

Strangely enough, as I destroyed the unused depots I realized one had magically been receiving items unloaded from the caravan- and now the items were all mine! I got a couple toys, silk bags, various barrels and even some blue diamonds. Definite exploitation potential right there.

I think I know what the exact problem is, too. The merchants unloaded their goods into the wrong depot, lost ownership of all of them and then left, since they had nothing of value to trade. Had I deconstructed that depot rather than complain about not getting any trade goods, I would've gotten a whole caravanload!

Still, I don't believe in cheating.

...this time.

If you deconstruct a depot with trader goods in it, the goods become yours. It counts as Seizing the goods in their eyes.

Currently you can also view the inventory of incoming traders and guards, and (d)ump everything you want. Dwarves will come by if they have the Refuse Hauling job, and dump the trader's +giant cave spider silk sock+ in your garbage dump. This does not count as Seizing.

Killing traders makes them upset just as if you had Seized. Maybe more because of the killing, but I'm not certain.

And to back up what was said before: more than one trade depot confuses traders and they often get buggy. Also, if they're attacked or threatened they often flee the site. Which sucks because ambushes always seem to spawn right when the traders do, so it's a race against the clock to see who gets to the traps at your fort's entrance first.

I always root for the goblins. They kill the traders and fill up my traps with their meat and bones.

A few thoughts.

Dumping the traders items is considered an exploit and is basicly the same as hacking the game and being happy at your skills at survival afterwoulds.

Caravans can appear anywhere on the borders of the map. If you depot is accesible from one direction it might not be from anouther, this is why hilly forts can have serious trouble if a path isnt smoothed out for them.

Im also a little worried about you deconstructing the depot, this could of put you at war/strained relations with the humans/elves you where trading with.

Same kinda question but different

I have been trading with dwarves for a good time, on year 4 now.  Have a competent trader.  We goto the depot, mark our wants and their inventory and settle at a boon for them in the name of 7*(gp whatever).  The say, no thanks.  Ok, I give them 157.  No.  I give them 307.  No. I settle at 1294* for them extra in the end and he says he is tired of my childish games and storms out, not letting me buy precious food stuffs I need for the many many many (gah) hungry dwarven children infecting (yes, i said infecting - multiplying like a virus - and no, into infanticide....yet) my fortress.

Why the hell did he get so finicky all of a sudden?  I literrally ended up offering everyhitng I had for the total sale (only 7000* total anyway).  Anyone know what gives?

That has happened to me, too. After they left, I was in serious trouble, by my fort survived. Remember that losing is fun!

Heres what Ive read and heard. At the start fo the game when your skills low a acceptable trade is at 50% profit for the traders. ie I traded them 750 worth of goods they should accept me taking 500 worth of goods. This goes down as time goes on but here the thing that went wrong with yours I believe: when a trader rejects your offer he gets angry and will expect a larger margin. Each time he rejects your offer its goes up untill he finally goes into his rage. You want to either gift him something to get his standards lower at the start or get the right balance straight away or itll cost you.

Is it just me or does that sound ridiculous and completely unrealistic?
No wait, never mind I can actually imagine a few people I know doing that.

Games get pissed off when you try to haggle with them.

DF and morrowind are great examples of this
